Looking for some help on setting the tension. My poor quilt is having a fit because I'm doing more ripping out than sewing! Help please. |

I have my top tension set on 5 and never change it, whether I'm piecing quilt blocks or sewing on garment fabric. However, if you are free motion quilting, your tension needs to loosened just a smidge, I think. Every machine (even the 2044s) are different and tempermental about their top tensions. I also have to adjust the tension on my bobbin case from time to time but my machine is due for a cleaning and adjustments so things may change a little once that is done. Okay, be sure you've threaded your machine correctly and have the bobbin in the case correctly and the bobbin case threaded correctly. These machines are very specific about the threading otherwise, you'll end up with bird nests. Also, be sure the bobbin and feed dog areas are free of lint. My bobbin area can have the smallest little clump of lint and it will tangle the thread every time. Patsy Patsy

MK Beane if at all possible, you need to find a manual for your 2044. I've had my machine for five years now and I make sure my manula is close at hand at all time. The other night I had to pull it out because I couldn't remember how to set it for button holes and sewing on buttons. Check out e-bay and you might just possibly find a manual. Otherwise, a Pfaff dealer is only hope. Patsy Patsy

Patsy: thanks for all the info.... My mother bought me the machine used for Christmas 2 years ago.... As things would have it, I've misplaced the manual and am tired of looking! I only know the extreme basics and don't even know where the top tension is on the machine! LOL Ding Dong... I know! Never had to mess with it. In February I went to a quilt show in Panama City and took a class and it started messing up. I did clean it real good and thread and re-threaded several times. At the show it just refused to straighten up! Then I got home and it has been working like a charm .... no problems... until yesterday and again it just is making a big mess and I don't know what else to do. I have been searching the internet trying to find a manual reasonably prices... well actually just find one period! LOL.... no luck. The closest dealer to me is 100 miles away ... I think I'll call them tomorrow. Would be well worth the investment. Thanks for your post and I am looking forward to chatting with you soon! Marcha K. |

Marcha, Set your upper tension on 4.5. Then gradually adjust your bobbin tension until you have a stitch that looks the same on both and bottom. The bobbin tension is adjusted by turning the screw on the side of the bobbincase. Try turning it in about 1/16 of a turn increments. There are two screws on the bobbincase. The one to use is slightly larger. Do not turn the other one.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom

Marcha the adjustment of the top tension is on the left hand side of the machine almost level with the take up lever. Sorry I didn't mention it before. The 2044 Quilt Expression does a lot, including sewing on buttons and is a very user friendly machine. In fact DH offered to buy me the new 2048 for our upcoming wedding anniversary but I declined and told him I would think about it. Patsy Patsy
