Hey Melissa, you can't fail as long as you are still trying. Do you have a manual for your machine yet? What comes to mind is to make sure the top is threaded correctly , the bobbin is put in the bobbin case correctly and make sure the needle is OK. How frustrating when you are all set to go. piney |

Is enough of the bobbin thread hanging out for the top thread to pick up? If it's too short it won't work. Doesn't matter if it's too long. Also, is the bobbin inserted to unwind in the correct direction? Is the bobbin in correctly if it's different on each side? Good luck, girl! Lennie |

Melissa - do not worry about things that do not work right away. I have been sewing for over 50 years. On occasion I have had the same thing happen to me. This happens when I have been away from my machine for awhile. I forget to hold onto the top thread while trying to pull up the bobbin thread and simply let the needle down expecting it to pick up the bobbin thread on its own!! Or as Lennie suggests I occasionally do not have enough of a bobbin tail, tho that does not often happen to me.

If you can't pick up the bobbin thread it is most likely one of the following problems. 1. The thread is not in the take-up lever. 2. The needle is not in correctly. 3. The needle is being threaded from the wrong direction. 4. The bobbin thread is too short to pick up. 5. The machine's hook is out of time. Have fun or don't do it, Tom

Sorry for the late response (stress induced amenorrhea and having apartment being looked at kinda ate my time as well as classes and work, fun!!) I think everything is threaded correctly, and there is definitely enough of a bobbin tail, it's pretty long. And when I finally get ready to go, and everything looks likes its threaded, the needle doesn't go down. When nothing is threaded and when I was figuring out how it worked, the needle moved. Oh grr. Thanks again! ~Melissa

If the needle won't go down, check the knurled, chrome wheel in the center of the balance wheel to make sure it is screwed down tight. Next, check to see if the motor is spinning, but not turning the handwheel - you could have a loose belt. Since you got your machine in a dumpster dive, it probably needs cleaning and oiling. The Yahoo Vintage Kenmore Group could help you with that process. Ed |

Hey Ed, I ended up getting a friend who has been sewing most of her life, and she couldn't really find out where the problem was. So I think I need to go find someone to fix it... So, at least the problem wasn't with me! I ended up going over her house and finishing up my lil dragon that I was sewing for Saturday. Well..here he is if you guys wanted to see him:http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a115/allanorah/Random/stumpy5.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a115/allanorah/Random/stumpy4.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a115/allanorah/Random/stumpy3.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a115/allanorah/Random/stumpy2.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a115/allanorah/Random/stumpy1.jpg He looks better in person...and I've dubbed him Stumpy. And I apologize for poor image quality ~Melissa

Cute lil dragon, I'm glad you got to finish him. The first pic I saw come up of him, spooked me a bit, I thought it was the lil demon that got into your machine. |
