How? Found quite a few of my daughter's in the laundry room. All had the wire poking out. There isn't enough room to shove the wire down and mend the hole. What do you do with these? Almost every solution I can think of would have the needle hitting the wire.
Thanks,
Weezy

You just may have to engage in the dreaded sewing by hand.

I usually end up pulling the wires out and throwing them away. I hate those things...and they really don't make much difference anyway...IMO.

As for sewing up the hole, sometimes, hand sewing is the fastest, simplest solution.
Take care,

I iron heavy duty patch material over the hole. eg. white denim. Best if can hand sew but the patch gets a few more months out of them. :re:

Once the wire pokes out it's really hard to get it to stay back in unfortunately. I've been waging war with my (once) favourite bra for a little while now but it seems to be winning.

First repair was to pop the wire back in and hand stitch the hole closed. Lasted about an hour. So I reinforced the hole with some fabric and stitched it in place. I got one days wear out of it.

The bra now sits in my mending pile waiting to have the wires removed.

I hope you're right Donna.

I used to have a couple of underwire bras sans wire in the drawer. I have to say, for me it did make a difference. They were never quite the same.

It's funny that this topic came up -- today I was just looking at the sorry state of my bras and wondering why I wear underwire bras in the first place. If I was meant to have perfectly round, perky boobs, wouldn't I have been born that way? At 23 years old, they are definitely not round or perky, and never have been! Well, I don't think I'll burn all my bras just yet..but it's got me thinking. :re: I've seen a few people make their own bras, and I can't help thinking how much easier it would be without the underwire. Hmm...

I have mended several underwires for my daughter. I use a small piece of double fold tape and hand stitch on all four sides. This has extended the life of many bras.

That's what I have done in the past to fix that problem. It worked for me. Now I've switched to VS's no wire bras, so I don't have to worry about wires poking through anymore.

I'd just toss em, and go buy some new ones in bright colors just for the fun of it.

Tossing them might be a good idea for some but for me, I can't afford to throw away a $30+ bra everyday. Besides, I had to give up underwire bras when I had my breast reduction done. However, I can no longer wear inexpensive bras. I've switched to Breezie bras from QVC. They are so comfortable.

As someone who must wear underwires to keep "the girls" above my waist (38G), and spends $$$ ordering them from England to get the style I want (seamless cups), mending is imperative. I save all parts of no longer useable bras and replace as needed. Mending a "wire poke" with bias tape is something I have not tried, but will certainly do so in the future! If the wire has lost its protective (plastic?) end, replace it. The raw metal will poke through that much faster.

I use the bias tape. I also purchased someone's sewing bits-and-pieces stash at an auction. It had some stuff that is like bias tape to sew, but is a bit thicker so it feels slightly padded. It works amazingly. But i dont know if you can still buy it or not.
Cheers, Soph.

This has been my problem - but I've never seen them anywhere at the shops. Maybe I should try a blob of glue or something.

You can buy replacement wires - I think they are actually meant for making bras - OK, who out there makes bras and how do you get the wires to stay in. For an number of years I kept snapping the wires. Interesting sound while in public or in front of a class or a patient. Now..... I find I often don't wear a bra. I have trouble doing up the back hooks and like front fastenings which so far are not wired, but my back does get sore.

Nancy I might sound silly but why don't you do them up back to front and rotate them around. That is have the cups at the back while you do up the hooks and then bring them around to the front.

Could you just put a dab of silicon stuff on the tip of the wire poke it back in and zigzag across the wire then hand sew a small satin patch over the stitching.
I havn't tried it but i have one wire that keeps poking me and usually just place a folded tissue between me and it.:re:

Doesn't sound silly, Pauline, but a view in the mirror of me getting dressing is. My shoulders are stiff and getting straps up is as difficult as doing up in the back. Add a little fluff in and rotations are not easy. Too much info, here!!

Pauline doesn't everyone put a back fastening bra on by putting it around you with the hooks in the front and then turning it around after the hooks are done up? Have I been putting my bras on the wrong way all my life??? :re:

I do either - depends on the bra I guess. Mostly I fasten at the back. A couple of my convertibles I fasten at the front because the the strap hooks come out of the band while I'm hooking up and I need to put them back in the loop.

Took the wire out of my poking out underwire (formerly favourite) bra. It just isn't as good anymore. It's wearable but no longer as flattering.
