To everyone who responded to my questions Thank You!! I think I figured out what I am doing wrong. Even though I am using all 100% cotton some of the fabrics seem to have more "give" then others. Plus I have been ironing seams with steam, not good I guess. Plus I guess it doesn't pay to use discount fabrics. (Discount table at WM) I found that even though the bolts said 44"-45" they turned out not to be all the same after washing and ironing. I have checked my seam allowance and they all seem to be 1/4". Anyway I will finish this Rail quilt since I already cut all the strips. Learn from ones mistakes. Thanks all. You have all been very helpful:smile:

By all means do finish this quilt and Keep It as an example of all you have learned. None of us has made something perfect the first time, maybe not even the
50th time. I have always tried to keep the FIRST project of any that I do so I can go back and see how far I have come. Some are good for a really good laugh too.. I have been sewing for 57 years and still make mistakes. I also learn a lot from the ladies on the forums I am a member of.

Keep Sewing :bluesmile

Anza54:

I use steam all of the time. The key is to PRESS not iron the seams. Use an up and down motion not a sliding back and forth motion when setting seams, this can distort the seams all sorts of ways. While you won't get as consistent results with "discount" fabrics, they can be used in certain applications. And there is the age old question "To wash or not wash your fabric before cutting?" There is no right or wrong answer here. Just remember, use all of the same in the project you are working on. If you have washed some of it before cutting then make sure the rest of the fabric for that project is washed also. These are just a few tips I have picked up along the way, usually thru trial and error LOL.

Please keep quilting, you will really enjoy it. As for ironing seams, I do use steam and I press the seams first to set the stitches, then I press the seams to the dark side or whatever the pattern calls for. Good Luck
