I want to make a cargo pocket...not just with a pleat for expansion, but also with...gosh, I'm not even sure if this is accurate terminology, but a perimeter gusset. Does that make sense? Anyway, I see plenty of this style on RTW but I'm not quite sure how to go about assembling it on my own. Do you stitch the pocket & gusset together and then attach to the garment?

Well, I've never done it either, but that sounds right to me.
It would give the pocket more space at the top, without more fabric at the bottom. (places for 'stuff' to get lost!)

Do you mean like the pockets on a fishing vest? They kind of have a pleat on 3 sides when they are sewn on to the garment?

I would love to know how to make those too. I have 2 grandsons and another one on the way - July! and little boys love those pockets.

I have to dig my pattern out. I made a couple of fishing vests and I remember having trouble on some of the corners, but I do remember you have to cut a square out of the corner(like you were making a fitted bed sheet) and then sewing the sides of the square together at 3/8" of an inch(on this pattern, I think) and then turning under a seam allowance on 3 sides(the top of the pocket is finished first as normal). Will try to get back to you tomorrow.

I would assemble the pocket and then attach it to the garment. If the pocket is rounded on the bottom, it is possible to attach a pocket from the INSIDE of the pocket but it has been longer than I care to think since I have attempted to do this. I believe you install the bottom of the pocket first and then the sides. I have seen these pockets also top stitched on the outside with a very narrow edge which would be very easy to do with a bladed foot as your guide. If you just happen to have a Bernina (probably not), I would use a number 10 foot on the outside of the garment with a seam very near the turned edge.

Just a note, if you have a serger, it is very nice to serge the inside edges of your pocket before you install it..some pockets ravel and this makes a nice clean inside pocket where things don't get lost as easily.

Check out page 2 of 8 on this site, it explains (with pictures) the basics of what I said in a pervious post. I will get you the sizing of the placement on the vest compared to the cut pocket size tomorrow off my vest pattern, but you will get the general idea from the pictures.

make sure you do the top of the pocket as you normally would first.

I did the measurements on three pockets, they are as follows:
D pocket-- 9 1/4" wide by 9" lg with 1 1/2" cutouts in the 2 bottom corners. The placement on the vest is 5 1/2" wide by 5 3/4" lg.
E pocket--4 3/8" wide by 5 3/8" lg with 1/2" cutout in the 2 bottom corners. The placement is 2 1/2" wide by 3"
lg.
F pocket--7" wide by 5 3/4" lg with 1" cutout in the 2 bottom corners. Placement is 4 1/4" wide by 3" lg.
It says cutout the corners of pockets. Fold right sides together and stitch a 3/8" seam.Turn under 3/8" on pocket sides and bottom. Pin 4 corners on placement marks. Starting at one top pocket corner stitch around pocket , close to folded edge. Bar tack at beginning and end.
When you get these pockets sewn on they form a pleat on 3 sides, but I did have trouble on some of the corners, trying to keep the corners square, you may want to glue (or baste) your 3/8" turn under. Or maybe if I was going to do them again I would increase my seam allowances to have more to turn under. Hope this and the pictures give you the info you want.:re:
