This is a dressing gown I've just made for my dd. It's not quite finished - I haven't yet done the belt or the belt loops but she couldn't wait to start wearing it.

It's not really the best sort of pattern (plaid) for a dressing gown - I think it's intended for baby blankets but it's so so soft she couldn't resist. And they only had plaid patterns in that sort of fabric. It's called cuddle fleece - I think it's some sort of micro chenille but with longer fibres - almost a fur. Sheds like crazy.

She'd only been up about 5 minutes. It takes 30 minutes to get her to talk and about an hour to smile. She's not at all a morning person. Dread to think how she'll be as a teenager.

Peas in a pod with my dd. Makes things difficult. I still don't call her before 10 or so in the mornings on her days off. :re:

I think I will Keep that in mind for Christmas gifts. My Grandchildren (6) would love it and the plaid could be unisex.

That is really nice! It looks like it was hard to do! Knowing what you do now, would you do it again? Was the plaid hard to work with?

It was difficult. There were a few problems. Firstly the fabric was a pain to deal with. It behaved like fur except that it didn't have a stiff backing. So as I mentioned it shed heaps and you couldn't see your stitching very well. Also it had a tendency to move a bit so some of the stitching lines aren't very straight. Which makes the lack of seam visibility a good thing really.

I refused to try and match the plaid at the seams. It doesn't look too bad mismatched because the squares aren't crisp in appearance they're soft because of the long fibres.

I had to modify this from the pattern I used - it's a vintage (well 1972 - is that vintage) simplicity pattern. The view I was looking at originally had buttons down the front and front facings but did still include a belt. Buttonholes were pretty much impossible on this fabric so instead of the facings (which were fold back facings - not separate) I changed the line of the front edges. The original pattern had the front neckline meeting and just overlapping under the hood but I couldn't see any way to fasten it without buttons except for a belt so I just trimmed the top part back. Changing the fastening method meant that I needed the extra width of the foldback facings to make the overlap for a belt fastening. The fabric is quite thick (although not heavy) and I didn't think it needed the structure of facings so didn't make separate ones. Lesson here - check these things (buttonhole viability) before you cut out the fabric.

I would do it again but there won't be any need. It's a single size pattern (size 8 and as you can see it's generously sized) and I made it for my youngest dd. I'll probably stash it away in the back of the cupboard just in case but can't imagine using it. However if I do happen to use it I will probably curse because I haven't made any notes about changes/issues on the envelope.

That robe just screams comfy!!! Great job-your dd is very pretty and I could tell she was either ready for bed and just barely up-my kids all looked like that growing up!

It does look nice and snuggly. It will probably last for a long time since there is lots of extra room in it now.

Love it Pauline. Exactly what kind of material was it??

But can we trade chlidren????? I can't get mine to be quiet of a morning, and yet I used to have them well trained. They used to know better than to speak to my until I had had one cup of coffee. Now they are like energiser bunnies - they just keep going and going and going!
Cheers, Soph.

I'm happiest when I am sewing!

I did add some extra length to it but I nearly added elsewhere as well as the pattern was a size 8 (from 1972) and she is now wearing a lot of 10s in RTW. I guess kids pattern sizes haven't changed in the same way that adult ones have.

BTW Dorothy I notice your avatar has been the same for awhile now. Does this mean you've found the one that suits you (a true reflection of your inner self :bg: )? Or did you just get tired of changing? Let the analysis begin.

It's called cuddle fleece. I bought it at Spotlight for 11.95 a metre. It was on special (VIP) down from 13.95 but they only had pastel plaids. I think it's intended for baby blankets.

Only one of mine is quiet (one might even say grumpy) in the morning. The other is up and around anywhere from 6am on and once he's awake that's it. Although he's approaching (galloping through actually) puberty so he might start sleeping in soon.

That's a very pretty fabric. I don't think I've seen anything like it, but then I haven't been into the fleecey stuff for a while. But I can sympathize on the slippery furry fluffy stuff. I have to go vacuum my sewing room!

Oh, that looks so nice and warm and cuddly. Kind of makes me want another bathrobe (not that I don't already have enough with 3....., but still). Looks good.
