My DD has given me some beautiful organic cotton/bamboo velour to make a hoodie and pants for my 5 yr old granddaughter. I want to embroider a fairy on the back which is somewhat detailed and I'm really not sure how to go about doing this, I have almost no left over fabric (I should get her to buy all my fabric - I seem to overbuy all the time). It's very stretchy and of course the velour texture will also present a problem. Am I crazy to attempt this? HELP!

Not necessarily BUT you really need to stabilize this. Use two layers of a good CUT AWAY. This will need to always be stabilized to keep it from pulling apart, so cut away is your only choice. You'll need to do this hoopless with either a self-adhesive stabilizer to a good spray adhesive to keep this from moving and pulling as you work. You also need to closely pin baste or just machine baste the fabric to the hoop. All of these are precautions to keep it from puckering. You'll need a good water soluble film on top to keep the velvet pile from coming through the design. When I finish with velvet I take the film out of the velvet with a pin between the pile and the WS film since you probably won't be able to dampen this fabric. The main trick in doing this will be in stabilizing the fabric...the rest is easy. pam

Thanks Pam, I did use lots of stabilizer, sprayed starch on it, used the water soluble stuff on top, put a piece of fusible interfacing on the back which will remain permanently and it worked really well. There was only one spot where the pile poked out and I just stitched over it once the embroidery was done. Considering how hard it was to sew with, the embroidery was a breeze. This is very washable fabric, so I'm not concerned about the little bits of soluble film left on it, mom will wash it as soon as she gets it before its worn anyhow.
