I got a zipper foot and I must say already, why was I trying to do a zipper without it? However, I have a question that I can't find the answer to in my book....

As I am stitching, are the zipper teeth supposed to run along the side of the foot, that doesn't have, well a foot? I had been doing it that way, but it also causes me to sew with all my material bunched up on the inside of the sewing machine, instead of out to my left on the table.... Did that make sense?

Does anyone know? Thank you!

When you're constructing a garment with a zipper, the pattern instructions usually call for the zipper to be sewn in before the rest of the garment is constructed. For example, if you're doing a dress and the zipper is in the back, you would sew the back seam (depending on what type of zipper you're using -- entire seam for centered zipper application or only from hem to where the bottom of the zipper will be for an invisible zipper) sew in the zipper and then sew front to back at the shoulder seams and then the side seams. If you're doing a skirt with a back zipper, it would basically be the same process except you don't have anything to attach at the shulders of course. If it's a side application zipper, you would, of course, sew the left front and left back piece together as above (depending on what type of zipper you're using) and then the right side seam. Does this make any sense to you? If not, scream and someone may have a better and more concise explanation for you.

It took me a couple of times to work it out (it's early in the morning) but yes sometimes that might be the case. It depends on the construction order. Obviously it is better and easier if you always have everything to the left of the needle but it's not always that way.

Aren't you making bags? If they're of your own design visualise the process step by step to see if you can put them together differently. Or ask again - somebody might have some ideas depending on what you're making. But if the bags aren't that big it might be easier to just put up with a bit longer while you get used to it.

I don't seem to be committing to much this morning. Sorry.

Hi, yes, they are zippered bags........ They are fairly big, 14x17 and 11x 14. yes they are my own design, however I was following the zipper installation from this pattern: Basically the first few steps.

I wanted to make sure that the zipper teeth are in fact supposed to be on the side of the foot that is "open"... that is correct right?

Thank you for your help!

The majority are on a bar that will "park" on one side of the needle or the other so that you can have the bulk of the fabric on the other side of the needle. In some cases the needle moves but the effect is the same.

In this type of foot the needle moves to one side or the other.

In the top right hand corner of this page is a different type of presser foot. It has the bar with a little screw on the back to loosen it, the bar slides the foot to the other side of your needle, you slightly tighten and you are ready to sew.

Most regular zipper feet fall into one of these two basic catagories.

I think this one is mine... I don't think you can move it (side to side or anything) once on machine?

That bernina one looked really neat!

I have seen one where the part moves from the front to the back of the foot so that the foot turns around but yours doesn't look like that either. I don't recall every seeing one where the foot didn't reverse (sorry). I give the Kenmore five demerits for that one!

However, all zippers should be inset so that you are sewing up the zipper, not down the zipper. For instance, in that picture, the zipper is turned around in position to the zipper in the picture. The blade of the foot would ride on the pant and the open part would ride against the zipper...the problem is that there are two sides to a zipper.

I have a Kenmore machine and my zipper foot is not like the one in the picture. I am able to move it to be either a left or eight side installation of the zipper.
