My grandmother is 89 and a few years ago, she took a quilting class. She made one quilt and found she really didn't care for it. The process of making a quilt that is. She loves quilts and her mother used to make them all that time.

What my grandmother does like to do is handquilt. She still knits and crochets and has for years, but handquilting is new to her and she likes it.

BTW, she still runs her own business. My uncle does the manual labor, but she does the phone calls and the books and probably will until she physically or mentally can't.

Laurie, your grandmother sounds like a real trooper. She deserves some recognition. A real example to all of us.

My mother says that my grandmother is beginning to show her age and is starting to slow down now. 'Course, she's had a hip replacement and both knees replaced, has some arthritis (not in her hands, though), so I guess at 89 she has the right to slow down.

I figure if I keep hand quilting and strive to continue to learn new things all the time, I just might be as mentally active as she is when I get to be 89.

Laurie, What a great treat a DGM can be. The Elders are my most favorite people to talk to, so full of wisdom and I'm sure more energy than me! Thanks for sharing about your DGM. Gena

I have to admit that I'm kind of proud of the fact that she can do what she's doing.

My own kids love the fact that they still have a great-grandmother left. They also have DH's parents and my DM and step-dad. Even though they are adults now, they still try to spend time with them when they come back home. They grew up spending a lot of time with not only their grandparents, but DH's aunts and uncles and mine, so they feel very comfortable with older people and love spending time with them and especially listening to their stories. They say it makes them feel more connected to them and to the past and they like that.
