We are up to 10 participants in our Hot Block Swap. Sign-ups will close when we have 16 participants or on May 22, whichever comes first.

This should be a fun swap.... and a good activity for those HOT summer nights.

Don't think of moonlight dancing with a man awash in an earthy cologne and cool tall drinks on the veranda while the ocean waves talk to the sandy beach below.

Do think of letting your creative energies explode while you test your talents in ways you never imagined!

Our inspiration for making our blocks for the swap is the painting HOT STILL SCAPE FOR SIX COLORS, 1940 by Stuart Davis.

Hope everyone gets jazzed about the swap! Come check us out!

I have cleared my in box a tad now Patty - I am using the painting as a desktop to give me inspiration every now and then - the more you look the more possibilities you see...

Roll up roll up - be challenged in a new way and move out of your comfort zones.

Lori, it's been a very long time since i joined swaps. But this one just grabbed me. I love this painting. I hope we can do it justice.
I'm very happy to join a swap with some of you that I've 'known' for years :)

Ideas - I am thinking a red ground with 2 circles, one blue, one half white and half blue. Through this would go a thin strip (1" or so ) of blue and white stripes across one diagonal. It is kind of hard to think how to describe it - would be easier to post a picture....

Either that or a red ground with 3 circles (more balanced with an odd number) each half white and blue, with one corner of the block thin blue and white stripes.

Anybody else? How are your plans coming?

My idea was a square on point within another square....and the inside of the one square was alternating hrt's of red and white strips..... You're right Jan, a picture would be such a better idea.

Well given that I am still a beginner quilter I thought I would stick with a pattern. There are two that I am wavering between. Both have been discussed quite a bit here on the site. One is the dissapearing nine patch the other is the half log cabin. The colors have yet to come to me.

Ohhhhh Gina....the disappearing nine-patch would be a good one! I was making it up from small moda charm packets by taking the 5" square and cutting it into 4 -2 1/2" squares and then using the other squares as a solid moda. It is turning out quite nice.....

I'm out of baby quilts and I thought I better have one on hand.........:bluesmile

I'm like you, Gina, I will have to stick to a pattern being rather new to this. Have been searching quite a bit and most of the ones that catch my eye are paper piecing. I have watched a couple of friends do it and pretty much caught on to it so might give it a try with some scraps first.
Patty, you are pretty much of an expert. In your opinion is paper piecing difficult once you understand the concept?
I have one more week of school left and then I can concentrate on this a little bit more. Am counting down the days to pick up my daughter from Ecuador in June. She wound up in the hospital again about a week ago. Seems to being doing okay today. Sheesh!!

I've been thinking about the kaleidoscope block. I want to use all 6 colors. I have also been toying with making up a design. I'll actually start cutting paper up to check the design next week. I tried to design it using Excel but my pieces wouldn't line up.

Bwhahahahahahahaha on the expert part.

YES...Paper piecing isn't difficult, once you get the concept.... I think the hardest part to understand is getting your piece lined up for sewing the next seam line and making sure it is large enough with extra for the next seam. Since you may not have outside edges with the straight of grain it is sometimes helpful to put a row of stitching in the outside seam allowance (similiar to stay stitching around a neckline so it doesn't stretch before you attach your facing or colar).

With all this said - I have only done paper piecing as foundation piecing for a quilt with fabric from silk ties. (Foundation piecing is using muslin rather than a stabilizer you tear away.)

There are some amazing designs you can achieve with paper piecing.....

Jeke, Hope your daughter mends quickly and I look forward to you being reunited with her. My daughter is driving home from Nebraska as I type this. I am so excited I can't even put it in words.

This has got my juices going Patty - think what you could do with a Mondrian? Mosty white, brights primaries of red, blue and yellow, thin black stipes running through the middle......oooooooo.:bolt:

Jeke....don't know if you have a site for paper piecing, but this one is excellent http://www.quilterscache.com/StartQuiltingPages/startquiltingthree.html

I'm sure you will be coming up with your own design in no time if you can't find something you like.

Jan..... interesting that you were thinking Mondrian, because my mind drifted a bit there also.

The days are slowing ticking away.....anymore free spirits thinking of joining the swap???

Patty, Thanks for thinking of me. It's that site that started me thinking about paperpiecing. I bought some practice fabric last night. Hope your daughter made it home safely.
