Does anyone reconstruct their kid's clothes to make them last longer? For example, for my 10 year old daughter, I cut her jeans off to make capris this time of year because its too hot to wear jeans here and jean shorts aren't allowed at school. I know the jeans will be too short for her by next fall. I've also got a pair of her jeans completely ripped in both knees that I will cut off just under the zipper and add gathered tiers of cute fabric for a skirt. Some pink capris she got black grease on the knees will become shorts. A long sleeve top she loved during the winter is going to become a short sleeve top this week so she can keep wearing it. What ideas do you all have? I would love to hear them! Vicky

I always did things like that with my both of daughter's clothes when they were growing up and I'm sure I will with my granddaughter as well. It's called being thrifty and creative.

If you sew with knits, cut the cuffs longer, roll up and the sleeves will be fine to go thru a growth spurt. Just unroll as they grow! Cover stains that won't come out with applique. MaryW

When I was growing up we got new clothes only at the beginning of the school year (unless of course you grew off season). Jeans and long sleeve T-shirts were the norm. Then come summer the would become cut off shorts and sleeveless or short sleeve T-shirts. With my own kids and being in Texas now the only thing we do is Jeans. They become either shorts or skirts and this year I think DD #1 wants to make a purse. Gina

I was just talking about this with a friend, and we both plan on embellishing clothes to make them last longer. Besides, it's really hip and cool right now to add embellishments. Ticia |
