Hello all, I'm just about to receive a yard and a half of a new-to-me fabric called Slinky Knit. I've seen and felt the fabric in ready-to-wear items, but I've never worked with it before. Does anyone have any tips for cutting and/or sewing it? I'm going to make a v-neck t-shirt with 3/4 length sleeves from a pattern designed for the material. Very many thanks in advance. |

Thank you very much MissTaraTara - those links were very useful. I did do a search, but in the face of so much information, I didn't know where to start! |

Nice to sew but be careful pressing as it tends to mark from seam allowances etc, is a good fabric to use a thin dowel to press seams. Use a simple pattern with as few seam lines as possible.

Thanks for the tip about pressing; I wouldn't have thought of that. The pattern I picked is designed for slinky, so it has minimal seams. Does it need oversewing on the seam edges or will a one-stitch seam suffice? It doesn't seem like it would fray, but I just wanted to check. |

Another thing to know about slinky is that it "grows" with gravity. Store your garment folded up - don't hang it. I also use very sharp shears when cutting slinky. And since it's so heavy, do make sure that all the fabric is supported on your cutting surface, or it will distort. Good luck with your first slinky project. Let us know how it turns out! Ann |

A few years back, Oprah wore slinky pants on her show. After a while, she noticed her crotch was down around her knees.
