I'm so depressed (well, not really.) I am making a really adorable strapless sundress for the daughter and thought how cute it was that maybe I should make one for me. So I went today to try on strapless bras. OMG, I'm still horrified with what I saw in the mirror. Those nasty little bubbles of skin that hang oaut between your armpit and your bra, well - try a strapless bra on!!! They grow!!! And all this skin hangs over the top, front and back!!!! Where the heck did all that skin come from???? So there I am in the dressing room, in total shock, realizing I'm the mother of a 30 year old, I have 5 grandchildren, I'm middle aged. I will NEVER EVER be able to wear a strapless or spaghetti strap dress again! I think I have to go drown my sorrows in a tub of cool whip.

Reality sucks doesn't it? I sorta had the same experience, I had lost tons of weight and went to try on a thin strap dress and thought OMG!, nope will not be trying those on again.

2 things - first of all you need to go shopping on the right day. I went bra shopping a few months ago and left utterly depressed. I thought I'd put on more weight than I knew (one whole cup size). A few days later I went again and was back to normal (mostly). You don't always realise how much fluid you are carrying. I was very glad I didn't persist the first time as I would've ended up with a bra that was much too big for 26 days of the month. Secondly - if you have bits poking out of the bra it is the wrong size. The only good reason for wearing a bra is to tame all the errant bits and put them in a place they'll look okay (maybe squashed over a bit more towards the cleavage ). Seriously - try getting a bra fitted by an expert - it can make a huge difference. Pauline

Oh, Laura, so funny that you should post this!! I have had two of the most humbling experiences this month...First, I needed a bathing suit for the beach this summer....ick!! Then, I had a dress that had small straps and needed a strapless bra...I don't have much; but it sure hangs down to my navel!! And on top of everything, I then decided to wear a little lace thing on top so that the bumples in my arms won't show! And guess what?? Old cleavage just ain't sexy... Oh well, I figure this is just the Good Lord's way of keeping me humble...Can we have dark chocolate with that cool whip??? Paula |

Dark chocolate shavings on cool whip. Or dunking dark chocolate into cool whip - or... MMMM good. Pauline, I hope like heck that my bra size doesn't get any smaller, or flatter as they sag towards my navel!! And I will definitely go to a specialty store, there is one in town that I've been wanting to go check out, and I do deserve a nice new bra, though I don't know about the strapless ones! Now if I could just take that little belly bulge (you know the one, the baby fat one that I still have even now that the baby is 27!) and move it up north to fill out the bra.

Yes a specialty store would do nicely--The old fashioned kind though, not the international sexy bra chain store kind. Once I became a mother, it was instantly clear that the perky little ladies they staff with just didn't understand what I meant by a kinder, gentler bra. I had a very good experience at the better department stores, which I found had a much greater selection, since they stock many different brands, rather than just the "house" brand. You'll find just the right thing.

Why bother with Cool Whip??? Go for the heavy duty whipped cream! It's a sad reality on the outside but on the inside we're sooo much better all the time! Lennie |

You ladies have made a depressed 58 year old feel so much better. I am LOL. Even with a bad cold and body bulges . I saw a white haired lady and gent at a restaurant (on the beach) a couple of weeks ago and she had on nicely fitting shorts and a sleeveless blouse. She was slim. I say it is a great day and age to be a senior. My grandma was relegated to dresses and orthopedic shoes by the time she was my age. I will wear what I want to wear Even if it is a "Red Hat and a Purple Shirt". Belinda |

When I grow old I shal wear purple!!! There are privileges that come with getting older. However, at this point in my life (65) I haven't discovered what they are unless it's calling your dh in the middle of the day at work and telling him you've decided that you want to buy a $3,000 machine (Pfaff 2056) and he says it's okay. I get to pick it up this weekend. Patsy Patsy

I've always pretty much worn what I wanted and I see no reason to change now. I tossed my red hat in the trash when all those people started wearing them all together at the same time and place. I never much cared to go with the crowd. Dorothy |

You all are so incredibly funny. I am sitting here giggling like a lunatic. Bridesmom, make the dress, and make a cute little half jacket to go with it. What are the called - boleros? Theresa

Bridesmom, Just read your post about your bra bulges. I got quite a laugh. Thanks for that. I think we of the ages we are have the same problems with the bra bulge. For years I wouldn't even wear a sleeveless top because of this bulge and also all the scars I have from 4 surgeries on my shoulder. They were all so visible, the scars, the bulge - you name it and I was embarrassed about it. It's only the last couple of years I have been able to get over this. I guess I have a lot of issues! I'm finding the older I get the less I care about what other people think. I love it!

I am currently on the hunt for a proper fitting bra that doesn't cost a fortune. I have 2 kids which have taken their toll on my body. I left the store the other day quite sad at how the bras fit. Then the next day I was so excited to find one that kept everything where it belongs. I promptly bought the bra and wore it the next day. I soon found out that it was uncomfortable as ever. Grrrr!!! I think buying a bra is worse than swimsuit shopping!!!

That's why my favorite shopping is for pajamas, loungewear, house slippers, etc. It always fits..... I've had luck with Vanity Fair bras, style 75-266. Tried one, loved it and went back for 3 more. I'm rather busty and they have been wonderful for support, comfort and shape. A piece of advice. Wash them separately and because they absorb any color they're washed with. I tried to be careful but they're still all shades of gray now....... Time for new ones. Lennie |

I always end up with a 'desperation' swimsuit and then need to try and buy another one next year because this is just awful...

I'm the same way with swimsuits. Being long in the body I have a horrible time getting one that doesn't cut me in half and what's with these hi cut legs that come up to your waist?? Who has the thighs to wear these things??? (other than the skinny models?)

I too have a long body - but the legs of a gibbon - anything to make them look longer! Well, nearly - but I don't want to look matronly either - there must be a sexy swim suit for a 50 year old out there somewhere - or have we all got to be size 0? love and kisses, Jan
