I have a question about topstitching. Like on a shirt front, or a pocket - how far from the edge do you sew it?? I seem to find I am too far in, and it looks dumb and homemade. Anyone have any suggestions???

bridesmom I could be wrong on my recollection of this but I think it is about 1/8 inch from the edge for top stitching. For instance, I don't know if you're a quilter but if you were using your 1/4" foot and used the inside edge if that foot, you would be stitching 1/8th inch from the edge or maybe even less than that. It's pretty close to the edge for top stitching. Patsy Patsy

Thanks Patsy. I think I have a 1/4" foot for my machine, I'm still learning how to use everything, so when I get down there again tomorrow I'll try it out.

bridesmom play with the 1/4" foot and see if stitching on the inside of the 1/4" or outside looks the best on a scrap. Patsy Patsy

I don't think there is a set rule for that, it's a matter of taste. Dorothy |

I agree with Dorothy. I remember seeing a sewing program once, and they were saying you should make it just as close to the edge as possible in order to avoid that "homemade look." That was the first time I thought about it. Then Sunday, my husband dressed up for Mother's Day and he was wearing a nice dress shirt from Banana Republic. I noticed at least 1/4 inch topstitching, if not 3/8. It's all about what style you're going for. Anything goes.

I like a decorative stitch -- maybe a wavy one or even flowers or vines -- on some garments. Dorothy |

I guess I'll just have to make some test runs before actually doing the topstitching. I find with pockets, or putting pockets on to tops mostly, that I end up not liking the look of it, so either I learn how to put pockets on without topstitching, or make myself some sample pockets and mark what the width is so I know what I want it to look like.

It really depends on the garment. When I was in school we always used the edge of the 1/4 foot for a guide and that generally works very well. On some things I use the bladed foot and move my needle as far from the blade as possible for topstitching. If you get too close it makes the edge wavy and looks too scant. As a general rule 1/4 inch or slightly less is a pretty good amount. If you are doing a double line, the rule is slightly different.

I use a blind hem foot that has a metal bar in the middle that the fabric glides next to. I set my needle to the farthest left, and presto! Beautiful and even, works like a charm everytime. |
