This evening dh was walking our little girl as usual and suddenly a very vicious dog (chow mxi) that lives at a house across the street from where dh was walking with Sophie broke the "leash" that he was "tied" with and charged across the street and jumped on Sophie grabbing her with his teeth across the middle of her back and shaking her before dh could get her away from the beserk chow. She's in the hospital tonight and the vet thinks she just has a lot of puncture wounds and not any broken bones or anything. When dh left the animal hospital at 6:00 this evening, they had her wrapped in a heating blanket to stop her shivering (the vet said she was in shock like a human being) and they were going to shave her from the middle of her back down her sides and back hips and legs so they could see how bad her injuries are. DH didn't want to leave her but the vet assured him that he would call him if she had anything wrong with her other than puncture wounds and that he would call dh at 10:00 a.m. tomorow moring. It is truly amazing how much space not only in your heart but in your house a little 4 legged creature can take up. I called the police and they said the animal control officer would call us but he hasn't done so yet. I'm going to call them again first thing Tuesday morning and report the dog and it's owners as this is not the first incident of that dog being very poorly or not restrained at all in the front yard of that house. There is also a vicious black german shepherd at the same address is that is very poorly or not restrained in the front yard. If dh had had a club of some kind, let me assure you the dog that attacked Sophie would be dead tonight.

That's terrible. I don't care what breed the attacking dog is, it shoud be destroyed. PERIOD. Prayers for your beloved pet.

Are the owners of that dog going to pay the vet bills?
I should think that is the least they can do.
I hope your baby recovers.

Patsy, I'm so sorry about Sophie. I agree with Judi, I think a dog like that should be destroyed. If Sophie had been a human child, for sure the dog would be destroyed, but when it's 'just a dog', the authorities don't seem to care, even though that 'just a dog' is our baby. I hope that Sophie is ok and that you get some action regarding the vicious dog. Hugs to you.

So sorry about your baby! She ought to recover fine but make sure it's reported to animal control.

Exactly the same thing happened on the 6th of this month. It was my dd's cattle dog. My dd was walking with her (on a leash) and the pit bull dog next door came flying from out of nowhere and jumped on poor Scout. He just rolled over and peed on himself. I'm sure that's what saved him.

I've been going with dd to the vet each time, $850.00 so far, and on the 21st the 30 or so staples come out. He had puncture wounds as well.

In Ca. an animal can be destroyed the first time it attacks a human and the second time it attacks another animal. This was the second time the pit attacked my dd's dog (no injuries the first time) but it wasn't reported or that dog would be history.

As it stands, it's going to be a small claims court case to get the money back.

It's so heartbreaking. None of us hate the dog that attacked. It's the irresponsible owner's fault!

Good luck and keep us posted.

The girls at the Vet Hospital told me this morning that Miss Sophie was sitting up in her cage and giving kisses. They had taken her for short walk earlier this morning so she could go potty (she won't go otherwise) and that she had eaten her dinner last night and had been drinking water. They were getting ready to feed her breakfast and clean her cage and change her bedding. The doctor is supposed to call me anytime now to let me know if he is going to discharge her today or keep her another night for observation. They said she had multiple puncture wounds on her back, back thighs and buttocks but that she doesn't have any broken bones or internal injuries. And, yes, we're going to present not only the owners of the dog with the vet bill for this but also the landlord who owns the house where the vicious dog lives. I called Animal Control and was told all they could do was warn the dog's owners that it had to be better restrained. We'll see if it actually is.

Miss Sophie sounds like a real trooper! Hope she is home soon Patsy! Our dog, a rescue from Canada, became a member of the family as soon as she walked through the door. My youngest complains that we have more pictures of Garbo than we do of her (she is exaggerating though - maybe).

Lennie said: It's so heartbreaking. None of us hate the dog that attacked. It's the irresponsible owner's fault! This is what I keep telling my husband when a certain dog in the neighborhood canvases the area without the owner. I actually like the dog better than the owners :re:

Patsy - glad to hear that your little Sophie seems to have escaped with out too major of injury. I know you can't wait to get her back and love on her. Good luck collecting the bill, they certainly owe the payment of it.

Sending hugs and best wishes to Miss Sophie. (I had a cat named Sophie when I was a teenager :bluesmile )
As a mom to 5 furkids, I know how they can be our babies. I hope your neighbors get control of their dog soon. It could be even worse next time. Maybe animal control should take it from them.

Patsy I'm sorry your poor baby had to endure that awful experience but I'm so glad she is better and it wasn't worse. I think as some have said that the dog needs to be put down. My StepDad had a dog he found in the parking lot of a hardware store and it was abandoned so he took it home and had it in my Mom's back yard in a fenced in area. Everytime the dog had the chance to slip out the gate when someone opened it he did and the first time it happened he killed a baby cat and the second time he got out he killed a little toy poodle my Mother was babysitting for a friend on vacation. He had taken the poodle out to potty and my Step Dad went to open the gate to go to the back yard for something and didn't know Mom had the poodle out and it ran out and grabbed the little dog that fast and killed it. After that my Mom and Step Dad had the animal put down. It was too dangerous to keep an animal that would attack another non agressive animal. They were afraid of a little child getting hurt by the dog if it got out somehow. That's what should be done with this dog that did that to your baby. Hug Sophia for me too.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Thanks you all for your concernand well wishes for Miss Sophie. She got to come home yesterday evening and she is doing well. My dh said the first thing she wanted to do was to go out her doggie door into the backyard and see if the squirrel was eating under where the birdhouse hangs. The dog that attacked her took two big chunks out of her left hip and buttock. He barely missed her rectal area which the vet said was a blessing otherwise Miss Sophie would have had major problems and would have had to have major surgery. But, she is doing good. We have to put hot packs on the wounds twice a day and give her antibiotics twice a day for 7 days. She goes back to see the doctor on Friday. She seems to be okay otherwise, she jumps in and out of her recliner that she has claimed and goes in and out through her door and still wants to take her morning and evening walks.

Thanks ladies for your concern and good thoughts. Miss Sophie is back to her normal routine but she seems to tire easily right now and spends a lot of time napping in the doorway of my sewing room. We're also giving her antibiotics and hot packs on her wounds twice a day. She's cooperating with us in taking her pills and letting us apply the hot packs to her wounds. She's gonna be okay and I guarantee that another dog intent on hurting her wiill never get the chance but might end up with broken ribs or a cracked head.
