Does anyone know where I can get a pattern for a modest swimsuit (one with a bit longer of a skirt, one piece) for a size 12 girl (she's 10 and thin), that won't break my pocketbook? I was looking at some on ebay, but really I can't afford to spend $12 on a pattern plus $5 shipping. We're raising our niece, and I try to make a lot of her clothing. I really do not like the very exposing swimsuits they have on the market for her age group Thanks! Faye P.S. If I don't respond quickly to your answer, it's because I often do not receive notification from here, for some reason |

Have you thought about just buying a bathing suit, then maybe making a longer skirt to match? I know what you mean about how revealing the bathing suits are now days. I was looking for a one piece for my 5 year old and found tons of skimpy bikini's.....maybe i'll find something (normal) for her to wear. Goodluck to you. |

I can't help with the pattern, but I just bought a tankini for my daughter from Old Navy's online store. It had boy shorts, so it covered her behind, and there was just a tiny bit of skin showing on her tummy. It was very reasonably priced, at $8 USD per piece - so it was $16 plus shipping.

Jalie has several great modest swimsuit patterns, but they'll probably be too expensive for what you're looking for... Still, you might find it inspiring. http://www.jalie.com/sewingpatterns/sports/allsports.html#2317 Isabelle

Another thought. Sewing magazines sometimes offer patterns for swimwear. Knipmode just did, for instance, but I don't know how easily available Knipmode is for you (I don't know where you live; I live in France and need to ask a friend in Belgium to pick it up and send it over). Others have also done that in the past.

Kwik-Sew has a wonderful book for sewing for children. It would have more than 1 pattern that you can use to justify the expense. Our local Hancock Fabric store sells the books and patterns. Kwik-Sew is known for its great fit and precise instructions. Hope this helps. Marty |

I have the KWIK sew book "SEWING FOR CHILDREN" . I don't remember seeing swimsuits in it but I will have to look in the AM to be sure. You could addapt a shorts and top pattern for a swimsuit. The cost of the book is between $20 and $30 but has multiple master patterns in it and can be used for a variety of sizes. It is ment that one should trace the desired pattern pieces off onto tissue paper. It is also a book you could use to start the DGD learning to sew. My Matthew made a fleece jacket from it using the sweatshirt pattern with a hood. |

My copy doesn't - although I also have a Kwik Sew pattern for girls bathers that looks pretty easy (I haven't made it yet). I have to say I haven't had a dud from Kwik Sew yet. I love them.

Faye, have you found a pattern that you like, or are you going to try to buy something?

Ladies, you are just marvelous! Thank you for all the ideas I'm thinking if maybe I head to one of the thrift stores I might find an older pattern (they sell them for $1) that might work... I can hope, anyway. So far, though, I don't have a pattern found. Btw, I'm in Colorado, out on the prairie (hence the name, prairielady ) so going to places like JoAnn's, or Hancocks is at least an hour and a half drive. Thanks again for your help! It's nice to know I'm not 'alone' out there, looking for decent clothing for her Faye |

Good luck, Faye! Keep us posted. I'm thinking about making myself a tankini, as well. By the way, I had a better look at that tankini pattern and construction in my Knipmode magazine, and it is exactly like a regular top - only closer fitting. Worth a thought! Isabelle

That is only ten days away now.. Lol, why do I get the feeling you are counting down the days, Libby? If I bought from Hancocks, it would have to be online, as the nearest one is about 75 miles away... |
