OK. So here is the deal. I was in Hancock's this morning and they had a crazy clearance sale. They had huge cones of thread regular price $7.99 on clearance 2 for $1. There is no identification on the outer plastic but on the inside there is a label that says: Coats Hilanton 100% Spun Polyester 8500 yards Tex 21 soft C1730 White D/L 367080 34 So what I am wondering is if this is serger thread or maybe something else like emobroidery bobbin thread. Anybody know what this is or where I can find out? Thanks! Gina

You probably already did a google search, but I did one also. I have no helpful findings for you. However, I did google "Hilanton" and I am assuming this page means that it is a company in Mexico (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=http://www.textil.com.mx/empresa.php%3Fempresa%3D1855%26q%3D0%253E&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=4&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhilanton%26hl%3Den) that manufactures thread for a few companies with Coats being one of them. There are no other details. Sorry |

I Googled it again this morning. Changing which details I typed in and I finally found some info using "tex 21 spun poly". Turns out it is a very, very light weight and cheap serger thread. It is used mostly in mass produced lingerie. I wonder if I might be able to use it as bobbin thread for my embroidery machine? Can't hurt to try right? Gina

I'm glad you were able to find out a little more. Don't you think that cheap poly will put a bunch of lint in the bobbin area of your machine? But I reckon at 50 cents per cone, it won't toss you into depression if you have to throw it away . |

Gina, I have only used the cheap thread in my serger loopers. I have found the cheap stuff usually gunks up my sewing or embroidery machine or breaks or shreds so badly that it isn't worth the frustration. I hope you have better luck than I did with my 'great deal' thread.

I've seen that thread at Hancocks and there is a reason it was so cheap. It will give you far more headaches that you can imagine. You sure don't want to use it in an expensive embroidery machine. Even if your machine was not expensive, the cost of cleaning and will be expensive...trust me. The first thing that we were taught about serging is that you need a good VERY strong thread for that because the pull is so great that it breaks most stuff. You cannot imagine how much lint is put off when serging. I actually had the top of my machine UNDER the cover and out of site tgotally pack with lint. When the machine was serviced, the tech had to take it apart piece by piece to unpack the lint. You really don't need to add to that department...and this was all out of my sight. I usually keep the inside of my serger VERY clean! When I take my serger in for service, the VERY first thing they ask me is what thread I use. They all seem to approve of Maxi Lock. pam
