I just wanted to show off the knitting bag I made for my daughter.
I used one of those Indian bedspreads -- you know the kind you used to make that hippie skirt many (MANY) years ago.

The tote is just beautiful. Did you use a pattern or just go freehand? I remember these bedspreads well - just draping one around you made an immediate fashion statement way back then. You have given me the inspiration to dig through my stash - or - make a trip to my nearby Indian Market. Thank you.

Love it! What a great idea. Must have been a sturdier fabric than the gauze to hold up well enough for a bag.

Good Job!

Thank you all.
Yes, it was from a commercial pattern.
It has tons of pockets, all around the outside -- the red part-- and inside too.
The bedspread I had was twin size and I ran out of fabric. For that reason the outer pocket is lined with a twill but the stiffness of that was a good thing. And then I was just short enough for the inside of knitting needle roll. Exactly one flat quarter short! (that's what those rolls are -- to wrap up knitting needles and crochet hooks in)
I found a fat quarter in my stash to use. Not much of a color match but the themes match.
You can't see it in the photo but there is a metallic gold rick rack piping -- so only one edge shows like scallops -- around the top of the red pocket and the top of the bag.
I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

And she thought all she was getting for her birthday is a new sewing machine.
Thank you all for looking at it!

I predict a surge in the use of recycled home decor and garments to make things from. Did you hoard the bedspread with this in mind? Or were you inspired by a clean out of the linen cupboard?

Looks great!

Actually, Pauline, I went with my husband to some kind of work conference he had in New Hampshire a couple years ago and rather than sit in the motel I went shopping. I couldn't find a fabric store so I went to the mall and found a kiosk with Indian imports, including the bed spreads.
It is not at all unusual for me to buy fabric I'm attracted to and have it sit on the shelf for a few years until inspiration strikes.
I'm sure I am the only one that does that.

I'm sure you said that with your tongue in your cheek Dorothy. :bluewink: I 'm pretty sure that what all us sewaholics do! I've got some stuff I've had for a few years, still waiting for the inspiration, but one day it'll happen.
