Following a discussion that almost got started on the Hot Block Thread I thought I would pose a question.

What influences you when you design a quilt - is it the colour choices, sometimes the patterns you see everyday around you can be inspiring.

I have some great photos of lichen on steps that are a colour palette of spodges of grey through to bright gold - merging and standing out against each other in turn.

I have had a postcard of this http://www.tate.org.uk/liverpool/ima/rm1/images/mondrian_church_lg.jpg in my kitchen for 4 years - I love the juxtaposition of blues and oranges - so vibrant the way they sing against each other.

I also vist this place http://www.henry-moore-fdn.co.uk/matrix_engine/content.php?page_id=2905 at least once a year - the grandure and joy in the stutues is amazing. Seen outside they change withthe weather, sometimes they almost look like old leather, sometimes shining so bright that it makes your eyes water. Are you catching a clour theme here?

http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/munch/munch.scream.jpg This one again has my favourite colour palette - but the tension within is quite extreme. We ask pupils to write an imaginative piece influenced by the painting - think, you are the person in the picture - what is the journey that has led you here. How do you feel? What happens next.

What else - the amazing basalt columns at the Giants Causeway, the texture of a cat's fur and the beauty of a pair of old, weathered, workworn hands....

So - what makes you reach for the camera and thing "I wish I could make something like that..."
love and kisses, Jan

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e81/Janicehodge/moore1.jpg is a 10 min sketch in watercolours I did last year. I am very proud of this - I have been trying to upload one I did in the gardens at the Barbara Hepworth Museum that Tony and I went to last yeat but am having difficulties - so I'll point you at this - http://web.mac.com/tony.p.hodge/iWeb/home/2006_Review.html instead where you can see me admiring the art.

Hey Jan, I may not be much of a quilter but I like the theme here. Wanted to share three of my VERY favorite photos regarding the combination of hues. The kitty in the boat is my desktop background.

The cat in the grass is beuatiful - I love the way his eyes are the same colour as the grass - those colours do zip don't they.

In the second picture, through the wet glass, you could get a similar effect by placing gauze over a pieced picture and embroidery it down - brings all the colours into a close tonal range.

The kitty in the boat is priceless - and again zinging colours to be found - love the texture in the wall too.

Hmmmmm......Lennie for some reason the colors in the last picture, First Mate, remind me of the Hot Block Swap....all we are missing is the cardinal :)

Glooming to me is an inspiration; the entire world is illuminated in the most warming and gentle glow. I want to capture it and put it in my quilts....similiar to what the Hudson River School did with their pictures.

I will talk more about this topic........but, my daughter will be home in 23 hours and I haven't seen her in five months. It is killing me! I have been house cleaning and baking and I am fit to be tied.

Jan, forgot to mention that I really love your own artwork. It reminded me of the "Vera" scarves from the '70's. Remember those? Always those beautiful colors.

Patty, sorry to say I've never checked out the "block" threads. I'll take a look. The colors in that pic are "my" colors from my dinnerware to my decor. Maybe not the fusia but that palatte.

Have fun with your dd. Tell us about it.

Patty and Gina,

Thanks for the invite but maybe some time in the future. Got too much going on right now with the house in shambles due to remodeling the outside.

Looks like fun but I'm still not a quilter.

Jan have fun with your girlies........and Patty, party down till the cows come home. (Don't know where that came from. In my experience cows come home around 5 in the evening......)

that's a great subject.
I'm inspired mainly by bold colors and shapes. That's what drew me to join the Hot Block swap. I collect photos of tiled floors or unique carpets. I even took a photo once of an upholstered bench on a train in London. I even bought a book on Southwestern woven rugs for inspiration.

Yup, you can spot us a mile off, we are teh one taking the photo's of the splodges on the rocks while the magnificent scenery goes on all around us. I have some great pictures of tiled floors taken in Ephesus - and Moorish tiles are so exciting - all those fabulous teselating patterns and such vibrant colours.
