Let me start by stating that just because I don't know how to do something, that does not stop me from doing it. I bought some regular colored t-shirts on sale at Michael's a long time ago, thinking I would get around to altering them, either by appliques or changing the neck line. Today I decided to change the neckline, ignoring the fact that I don't know how. I ripped the stitching on the neck ribbing out, and took that off. I then doubled over a hem, ironed it, and stitched it. So far so good. Then I put it on my daughter, the long and skinny kid. The shirt was falling off of her shoulders. So I wound a bobbin with elastic thread, and stitched it. Well, it didn't tighten anything up, so I rewound the bobbin as tight as I could, and then stitched it, and it gave it a cute little gather that was just about right. So I gathered the sleeves as well, stitching along an existing stitch line. Tonight I tried to find out just how you are supposed to use this stuff, and what I'm finding says to not stretch the elastic when you are winding it. So what did I do wrong that it didn't give me any gathers the first time I did it? When I looked at the stitching, it wasn't straight like the tightened elastic stitching was, but was almost a geometric pattern (I have since ripped it out, which was a pain, so I can't show a picture of it). Alright, and let me start by saying that, although I don't know you well, that attitude is my favorite thing about you. Keep it up. And I'll finish with: Wish I could share some pointers, but I don't have any. I'll be looking forward to reading replies. Andrea

I don't know if this will work on a folded over neck edge but when some want to add shirring to a garment, they will stitch the elastic thread unstretched and them steam it when done. The steam somehow draws the elastic up. Okay, I think these may help? New Outfit for Zoe. Thanks, Miss Tara Tara, I wasn't thinking shirring, so I never thought about ironing the neckline when I was done. Also, I just used a straight stitch. Now I wonder what will happen when I wash and dry this t-shirt. I wonder if it will be too tight? Theresa

Andrea, I have to say that sometimes that attitude gets me in way over my head! Unfortunately, I don't have a sewing buddy who can bail me out when that happens!

Temom, are there any sewing guilds where you live? We have several here in Memphis and I know there are American Sewing Guild chapters in Nashville, Johnson City area and Knoxville. If I knew the area that you lived in, I could try to find a sewing buddy for you. You can email me privately. Happy Stitching! Marty |

Temom, besides this forum I got a lot of help from this article on shirring. http://sewnews.com/resources/qa/qa0506a/ After reading it I shirred these two tops. I have never shirred anything before till I did these tops. I noticed that one row of shirring didn't gather up the fabric much but each subsequent row gathered iit more and more. 3 rows made things pretty gathery. I didn't steam them but I did make a mistake and Iron the yellow one with steam and the Iron against the shirring took some of the stretch out. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u174/grandmac_album/P1010042.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u174/grandmac_album/P1010035.jpg Grandma C/Belinda Good luck, let us know how the t-shirts turn out. Michaels has t-shirts 5 for $10 right now and I am anxious to know what you design. I'm thinking something like t-shirt dresses. |
