I have just cut out the pattern for Vogue 2890.

I had all my measurements taken and cut out the pattern accordingly.

Due to the cost of the fabric etc, I decided to tissue fit the pattern. To discover that the front will fit beautifully ............. but the back looks like it is 4 sizes to big!!!

The dress is strapless with boning in the front and side zipper.

So what do I do?

Can I just cut the back and back skirt to the smallest size or do I adjust the pattern the required amount for the back section only.

If I adjust the back area, am I better folding the excess in and if I do that do I need to fold the same amount in for the back section of the skirt??

Can someone please help????????????

I have wanted to make this dress for so long, and know I dont know what to do about the back.

Thank you for your help

With 9 kids I dont have time to sit down a lot, am always on the go, I even read the law books walking the floor with the baby at night

Am back down to 65kg and at 168cm that makes be about a size 10 - 12 australian sizing.

Why is it that the European sizing makes us feel 'larger' than we really are.

Ready made I can buy a size 10 - 12, make it yourself you move into 16 -18 :nc:

It is a gorgeous piece, and I hope to see a picture when you get it done. If the front is fitting properly, great. Go ahead and make folds in the back tissue piece to get it to fit you right, and yes, you'll have to make corresponding changes to the back of the skirt in order for them to match up later. It's such a fitted style, and relying only on fit and boneing to get it to stay up, I really would encourage finding some scraps for a muslin... I've been known to use up junk scraps from the closet and also $1/yd remnants at the fabric shop, no matter how silly the print. Are you pretty experienced in sewing in boneing? the process of making the mock up could help hammer that detail out, as well as making sure that, even if the front piece(s) fit(s) well, that the boneing is in the proper position on the bust so that it will support everything.

I just finished posting an answer for you in the formal wear section as well, and I'm happy to see that Andrea had the same idea.

I know its frustrating with the pattern sizing, but from what the other women on the forum have told us, the sizing has never changed in 50 years. And I have found that over the years, I haven't changed in size, but in RTW I have gone from a size 16/18 to an 11/12. I think they call it 'vanity' sizing, so you think you are smaller than you are.

Thanks AndreaSews & Bridesmom for your reply.

Was going to do a muslin anyway just wanted to be sure on how to make the alterations so I didnt get frustrated later :bang:

Yes I have done boning before so that is not an issue for me

However do you think that considering the only thing holding up this dress will be boning, an excellent fit and the grace of god :nervous: , would it be better to use a ling and chiffon with a bit of 'stretch' in it or not? :nc:

Australia really hasnt got into vanity sizing, in fact recently for fashion week in Australia we banned underweight models due to the influence that they inadvertently have with teenagers/young people in relation to body image!!

Not sure I understood your question... A lining and a chiffon with stretch (?), as opposed to what other option? I do think the key here is fit and understructure. Could consider a waist-stay if the skirt is a little bit heavy.
off topic: Bravo to Australia, and at least one European fashion industry this winter who made the same choice re: dressing up little twigs and sending them down the runway. It's hard to believe that a teen would want to be like that--They look so doped up half the time, and they don't even appear to be having any fun.

That is an unusual fitting problem. With 9 kids? My guess is that you are full busted and the larger size (in front) is actually taking the place of an alteration to the bust area? If you had shoulders in that dress I'd worry that they would be too wide...as It is, I'm afraid you'll need to take up some of the waist. Do make it in a muslin and make the back in the smaller size...and I'm guessing you'll end up making the skirt in a smaller size all over. I would suggest that you make up just enough of the dress to test it...you can probably use the lining pattern for that. I'd make the top and just past the hipline in the garment to make sure that everything is right.good luck!

Paroper, I believe you may be totally correct.

I had forgotten to allow for the fact that I am still BF my  Monique. This would definately make sense.

Will do a muslin of the top and the upper part of the skirt.

Am hoping to get that at least cut out tonight :re: ....... if I can get this sick baby to sleep
