I'm trying to make a pair of pants I printed from the SewingPatterns.com disk I bought, but it has a pattern piece called a "button catch" and I don't know what it is or what to do with it! I've been sewing a long, long time but I've never used one or heard of it! I know it goes somewhere by the zipper, which I've already installed, but with no pictures with the instructions, I don't know how to proceed or if I even need it now. If anyone wants to look, I'm making pattern number 5503, which can also be seen here http://m-sewing.com/index.php?page=/class-start_page/do-page/aid-2791.html
I'd appreciate any help I can get so I can finish these pants.

keljo are they talking about the fly portion of the zipper you would put under the or over the button OR does it refer to an area where you have a second inside button to avoid pulling

reading this again I think they are referring to a button hole!

The instructions say: "4. Turn under and press extended zipper facings at front parts. Sew the zipper under closure allowance (left edge) along edge. Sew zipper free braid to right one-piece facing. Fold button catch along the center and overstitch lower short edge. Topstitch one-piece closure facing on button catch on garment left edge. Topstitch slit right edge catching facing."
I was just looking at a pair of dh's pants and under the zipper on the side that isn't sewn to the flap, there is a piece of fabric like a facing, I wonder if that's the "button catch"? Also on his current work pants, they have a button fly (we work in a prison and a zipper would set off the metal detector!) and they have the same facing type piece with the buttons sewn to it.

I've never heard that phrase but it sounds like it is part of the fly. The fly sometimes is in two parts so that it protects the body from the back of the zipper. It could be that piece.

Hi Pam,
I sure hope that's what it is because that's where I put it!
