I bought a batik printed skirt panel at Hobby Lobby. There was a tag on the bolt that said "ask for instruction sheet". When I asked, the clerk told me that no instruction sheets had been sent to them. Because of this it was marked down to $2 a panel. I thought for $2 I would give it a try. The full panel is 88" long. Can anyone explain how to make a half circle skirt from a panel so it will hang right? I'm afraid the back hem will be higher than the front if I don't cut the waist right. I can't make adjustments at the hem, because of the striped designs going around it. I've made a full circle poodle skirt before, but it was just for a Halloween costume for my daughter. I remember it hiking up in the back a bit. I saw some half-circle wrap skirts on ebay a few months ago that appeared to be made from panels. Not sure if I should try that. |

I don't know how to go about it, Bama, but if the manufacturer's name is printed on the selvage, perhaps you can do a search for a website...they would probably have the instructions there...maybe...???
Take care,

The directions are all spread out so I will try to explain them as I go. 1. Stay stitch upper edge of front & back 3/8" from top. 2. stitch front to back at side seams stitching left side seam from lower edge to notch (for zipper) back stitch at notch. 3. Insert zipper on left side. (ask if you need more directions on this. 4.stitch twill tape to waist edge having it extend 5/8" beyond left front & 1/2" beyond left back opening. 5. Turn under ends of tape. turn tape to inside; press, baste close to inner edge of tape. on outside stitch as basted. 6. Sew hook & eye at upper edge of zipper 7. Allow garment to hang overnight, Mark length, Hem I didn't think you need all of the pressing & extra basic directions like trimming the hem etc. If you need more the pattern I have is Simplicity 4236 they have 1 made with a Batik panel on the front. Donna, There's nothing printed on the selvage edge. The ladies in the fabric department were baffled that they didn't have any instructions sent with the bolt. Nobody wanted to buy it because of it. I had looked at it several weeks ago and didn't get it ($8 a yard then), but when it was marked to $2 a yard I decided to try it. We spread it out on the table to see if I needed 1 or 2 panels and the clerk and I decided that 2 panels would just be too heavy for one skirt. On me anyway. Then the clerk said she would give it to me for $2 for the whole panel. The panel is over 2 yards long. I guess if I don't get it right, it will be good for quilt scraps or dusting cloths. Barb, What size zipper? Thanks for your instructions. The hardest part is figuring how to cut the waist line. I will check out that pattern. Thank you both. |

7" zipper, 1/2" twill tape. I used grograin ribbon instead of the twill tape. Knowing my DD she needed the extra stabalization. The pattern was very helpful in cutting the waist size.

Nearly every pattern company has a poodle skirt in their book. I'd just find out what pattern brand is on sale and buy a poodle skirt pattern. The problem is that the waist is not a circle.

Thanks Pam. That's where I ran into problems when I made my daughter's skirt without a pattern. I just cut a circle for the waist, a narrow waist band, and put velcro on the side instead of a zipper. It worked out okay since it was a Halloween costume and had slips underneath, except the back was a little higher than the front. She was only 7 or 8 so she didn't care. I however, don't think I'd be as cute in a skirt that hiked up in the back. I'll be shopping in a few days so I'll see what I can find on sale. |

The trick we were taught when we made poodle skirts (yes, back in the dark ages) was put the skirt on before attaching the waistband, and tie a cord around your waist to hold the skirt in place.. Then, a friend must adjust the skirt until it is even all the way around.. Has to be even... now, take a marker or piece of chalk and mark all around where the cord is tied..This is where the waistband will be attached.. Note: remember , we made them from felt, so they were not hemmed.. You must take this into consideration nowadays according to what fabric is used..
