Just finished this http://www.1sewingpatterns.com/images0/4440bmc.jpg for my daughter, out of a stretch poplin, now she wants a grosgrain ribbon sewn on under the bust (like the white one on the right), which is permanent and she won't have to retie. I'm at a bit of a loss on how to sew this on, as the dress is very snug being an empire fitted waist, as if I sew the ribbon on as the dress is, unworn, the ribbon will be too snug when the dress is worn, understand??? HELP!

I do understand. I have 3 thoughts on this. If the pattern called for a non-stretch and you used a stretch anyway, well, it _was_ cut to the right size for a non-stretch, and so it shouldn't undergo any stretching.... If that doesn't convince you that everything will be alright: If you do sew it down, all the way around, at the top and bottom edges of the ribbon, then the stretch poplin will be stabilized throughout the empire waist, and so stretch shouldn't be an issue anymore. OK, if neither of those makes you happy, consider this alternative: Use 2 lengths of ribbon which meet at the center front (or back) and clasp with a skirt hook. Make a small, simple bow at the end of one of the pieces of ribbon, and sew on a piece of elastic behind it. At the end of the little bit of elastic, a skirt hook. And on the other side, just an "eye" at the end of the ribbon. The small piece of elastic behind the bow will provide just enough "give" for when she breathes/sneezes/bends, etc, so she doesn't pop the stitches in her snug little dress, which is terribly cute. :)

Andrea's reply was fantastic! Thanks Andrea, that will probably be helpful for more people than Laura

I have to say I'm impressed too. I was interested to hear what would come of this as I fully expect to have a similar issue one day. I have been considering a couple of projects mixing knit and woven fabrics.

It is a really cute pattern too. I'm missing summer already.

Oh Andrea, you are brilliant! I could put little loops at the side seams to keep the ribbon in place. The little bow actually is going at the front, which makes it even easier, and it will be permanently attached at the zipper, I'm going to work on it this morning, then post a picture, you are right, it is a terribly cute little dress!!

Here's pics of the finished dress, I still have to attached a snap to one side of the bow so it doesn't sag, but DD needs to try it on to make sure this is all going to fit right. She's larger in the bust than I am so me trying it on is useless. I can't take credit for anything but the sewing, she picked out the pattern and the fabric. Isn't it the cutest little thing? Course now that I look at the pics I don't have it on the dress dummy quite right so it's saggy in the bust. Oh well, here it is!

That looks wonderful. Not having seen it without the ribbon I couldn't say for sure but I think it gives it just the right finishing touch.

Oh to be brave enough to wear a dress like that again.

What a great job you've done - yet again.

Great job, Laura, on the dress. It looks like something my DD would wear. The ribbon really makes the dress pop in the right place. You did good. I really liked the way you matched the florals for a continuous flow.

aw shucks, gals. Laura, that dress is very pretty! I think the black & white look, which is so popular now, deserves just a tiny splash of color, which that print and ribbon provide. I am glad you worked it out
