Our soon to be 1yo orange cat, Miz Weasley, has developed a bad habit of chewing on things. My daughter shut her up in the sewing room yesterday and when I found her she had chewed up a bunch of papers that dd left in here. Little pieces of paper everywhere. Then she started working on some fabric scraps that were in the floor. I think she had been in the waste basket next to the table. One day I caught her chewing on the side of a picnic basket that I have some patterns in. She did some damage to that. I've caught her chewing on shoes, the dog's toys, anything that's left within her reach. Yesterday she started biting my feet and ankles. I can't sit down near her without holding her so she won't bite me.
I know puppies will chew things, but this is the 1st cat I've had that chews on everything. :nc:

Ah the joys of kittens! They LOVE to play, they love challenge, they are extremely intelligent.. they get bored very easily.

Kitty is getting into your stuff and playing with it because she's bored and wants to play. The absolute best solution is - get another kitten! They will keep each other company, play with each other, etc. It's truly amazing how strong of a bond that cats can develop. But do it soon while she's young - older cats adapt less easily to a newcomer. Ask your vet to recommend a no kill shelter that can work with you to find the perfect kitty companion for your feline friend.

Keep in mind that kitties are curious explorers , they love to seek out adventures so catproofing is a must. Kind of like kidproofing except cats do not understand the concept of NO - the world is their playground. With time you kind of learn what they like to get into, and what to lock up, store in a closed, etc. I use lots of plastic tubs for keeping things secure that I don't want attacked by my cats. I'm a Polynesian dancer, and have to keep all my costumes and implements with feathers locked up when not in use or kitty will very thoughtfully kill them for me! (smile).

If the best solution just isn't do-able (andit really is the best solution), then kitty needs toys. It's not just the toys, she needs you or someone to play with her - to sit down and throw the mouse for her, drag the string for her to chase. Twenty minutes a day at the very least (see why another kitty is a much easier solution?! smile)

GOOD LUCK WITH KITTY

A spray bottle of water might break her from that. Every time you see her chewing something other than "her toys" spray her. I know it might be cruel but at least you might stop it before she really does any damage.

Turbo has a toydog that he carries around the house and bites the crap out off. That and he loves bus tickets - I have caught him going through the bin looking for post-it notes. Strange animals cats. The worst is I was sitting in bed yesterday having a cup of tea and the cat came up all lovely, bit me in the nipple and ran off!

Isn't funny how cats get a favorite toy. I had one that loved soda bottle caps and would dig them out of the trash.
Another one loved those clear plastic tops of hair spray bottles. He also would pull the towels from racks in the bathroom. He couldn't stand towels to hang there.
And several years ago I had one that loved to torment my husband's beagle.

She could have either teeth or gum problems. My Snowshoe cat didn't loose all her baby teeth when her adult teeth came in. That left a gap between the baby and adult fangs. She got a bad case of gingivitis.
Also our ferrets will chew on the cage bars in frustration from pain. I'd have her checked.

Ouch Jan!

I wondered about her teeth, but she was at the Vet's about 2 months ago and everything checked out okay. Plus I don't see her chewing stuff like that when she's outside. She lives outside most of the time. We've been letting her inside more in the day time since school is out, and she's really being naughty now. She will be on the sun deck all sweet and calm, then let one of us open the back door and she runs past us like lightening and slides across the floor. She even grabs the sofa legs and bites them and kicks them with her back legs.
I think I'll try the spray bottle on her. DD and I both have bite and scratch marks on our ankles now.
Both of the other cats never acted as crazy as this one. They were both playful (one still is) but they never bit.

This is how wound up this cat is. A few days ago I saw her leap from the deck into a tree about 3 feet away trying to catch a bird. She fell to the ground and scrambled right back up the tree. Some mornings I hear her running back and forth on the front porch. My daughter said she thinks the cat is on catnip or something.

Turbo acts a lot like that Bama, never can tell if the evil will get him... He is normally worst when he is hungry - kind of like a diabetic who needs to eat - he gets really cranky

Isn't it funny how animals have different personalities? Our Cupcake is sweet and loves everyone. He lets anybody hold him or pet him and purrs the whole time. One of our other cats is cranky and must give you permission to to be near her. She can give you some real go to #*!! looks too if you disturb her. Sometimes she cuddles and bathes the other two cats, sometimes she slaps them. She's been that way since she was spayed.
Then there's Miz Weasley. Some of my daughter's friends are afraid of her. :re: It's like she's on speed. Sometimes she reminds me of a slinky the way she bounces and squirms around. She's so quick she catches me by surprise when I feel those little teeth in my ankles.

Do you have any Valerian or Catmint growing where she can get in it? That would make her high like catnip!

We do have some catmint growing, but I haven't noticed if she's been in it. :nervous:
