I understand that Wilcom is one of the best professional digitizing programs on the market. I don't know what the current price is but about 3-4 years ago it ran around $16,000. Wilcom makes Bernina's software and another (not sure which one). It is said by many that the Bernina V5 Designer Plus is one of the best out there. It runs about $2000 msrp. It has just gone through an upgrade, so the current version should be pretty much "it" except for free updates for a while. Probably the most common software out there is Embird which is purchased in modules. It is quite reasonable. With the basic program about $129 msrp, then you add programs as you need or can afford more. Many people do digitizing with this program. pam

I have never used Wilcom myself. At one point the major advantage that I knew about was that the Wilcom produced several different commercial formats that Bernina's Artista software could not. Now that gap has been narrowed a bit and Artista will allow you to save in some of the commercial formats. It also recognizes several different "picture" formats like JPEG, BMP and several others, none of which I am as familiar. The major advantage of the Artista software, and presumably the same with Wilcom is that it is a Vector program which gives versitility when enlarging and decreasing designs (reassigning the stitch counts to match the size of the design). Most home programs are not vector programs.
