I have been trying to sew fringe trim onto a stretchy fabric. (Think "fringe bikini") I have tried a variety of stitches: stretch (the one with 3 lines), mini lightning bolt, variety of zig zags, and normal straight (stretching fabric as I go). Nothing is working. None of the "stretch" stitches are allowing my fabric to stretch! Any other suggestions? thanks jenny |

If you want fringe, make some out of a stretch fabric. Probably the only place you might find a stretch fringe is a store that caters to athletes - like skaters, swimmers, dancers, etc. Weezy |

If you have a stretch fabric and you stretch it out while you put the fringe on then let it go back to shape the fringe would bunch up when relaxed and stretch out when the fabric is stretched. That's the theory. But with fabric as light weight as swim suit fabric you would have to have very light weight fringe (especially the band it is attached to) for that to work. Maybe you could sew just the fringe to a strip of stretchy fabric -- go over it several times -- then cut the binding off and you would have stretchy (but a little shorter) fringe. It seems to me like it might work -- but then, what do I know? Dorothy |

Thanks for all the help. I tried creating my own stretchy band with the fringe attached, but it would not lay correctly. In the end, I scraped the knit idea and went with a woven front with fringe attached and a knit back to tie it on. I think its pretty cute. I was also planning to put the fringe on dance trunks, but I knew I would run into the same problem. So...I built a tiny pair of shorts. You all were very helpful! This place is great! jenny |
