DH wants some welding beanies for his motorcycle. I have taken an old one apart which has 2 sides which are a little bigger than 1/2 circles and one long rectangular strip for the top, front and back. He wants them longer in the front, by 3/4", and I am having a hard time envisioning how to do this. I tried splitting the 1/2 circle vertically and expanding it, but then it makes the beanie too large. Does any one have any ideas?

Any chance of a picture to help our understanding?

I think you need to make the half circle a bigger piece of the pie - If a half circle is 1/2 a pie - 180 degrees- then you need to add an extra slither of pie - say 190 or 200 degrees to make it bigger at the front - the circumpherance will have increased but the fit will be the same so you would need a longer rectangle. What is the diameter of your semi circle (or the length of your rectangle - that would give us half the current circumpherence) and we should be able to work out how much bigger to make it. I trust you have a protractor?

Either that or draw around the bit you have got and just carry on around the circle line (on one side only)until it is 3/4 inch + seams allowance bigger. Adjust your radius accordingly and then extend your rectangle to fit.

I feel as though I have been about as clear as mud....

http://www.4ormore.co.uk/projects/fleecehats.htm

It's intended for kids but should be easy enough to upsize it.

I made one for dd last winter and it turned out pretty nice.

Jan, you did it again! I must remember to always ask a scientist!!! That will work exactly as I need it to I think. It is not exactly a 1/2 circle, but adding the extra 'pie' piece at the front will make it longer. And making the rectangle a bit longer will still keep the same fit in the head. Thank YOU. It is so nice to be able to put something like that out and know someone is going to figure it out!
