Hi, Thank you for accepting me in this forum. I have been sewing for over 30 years and have tried many different types of sewing as the needs came up but currently I am enjoying sewing clothes for my grand children, and friend's children. Have a favorite Elna sewing machine and 5 thread Elna serger also Kenmore and Singer machines. Also a room full of fabric from the many stores (Joanne's and Hancock's and others) who have closed. Hi to everyone happy sewing...with a smile! Joni in CA

I found some fabulous fabric with pirates on it a cotton print that has designs that are young, child friendly, not black and red with skulls or scary things. Just treasure boxes with gold and a sort of captain hook character and and some pirate ships. I just thought I would make a "hawaiian shirt" pattern and then after I finish those to aplique some jeans with applique of compass or treasure map on the legs. So far I have cut out the shirts..probably it will be a week or two before I get them done. I don't have a digital camera so cant get photos to you but I will try and tell you how they turn out. thanks for asking,

Hi Joni and welcome. Those shirts sound quite funky indeed. I'm sure the kids will love them.

The trees in Australia are also waving at the moment but they're getting a bit overenthusiastic and also coming down to say hello. Along with fences, plant pots etc.

Right about now California would be really nice.

Hi to the new ladies on this thread! Sewing is sensational and I do need to sew for myself BUT sewing for kids is so much more FUN. I have some microfiber fabrics I got when Jo Ann's was clearing out dressmaker fabrics (making more room for quilt fabric) but I hear that it might take different needles and not sure about threads to use.. I am still working on the pirate stuff so no hurry but if anyone runs into info about sewing on Micro fibers please post it to share. Hope you have lots of good stuff going on this weekend.

Sandra Betzina says use a sharp needle -- Microtex in a small size 60 or 70 and change them often because the fabric will dull them.

are they available local fabric stores? or do i need to go to the sewing machine store to get them or do I have to order them from Clotilde? or Nancy's Notions? Are you aware of polyester thread being ok or cotton/poly blend I just didnt know anything about this fabric except that it wont have to be ironed or dry cleaned-- yeah and great feel of the fabric as well. But I will get a bunch of theose needles when I find them thanks Dorothy for your advice. *big smile*

You should find the needles easily at the fabric store -- right next to the universals.

Betzina says use a fine embroidery thread. I don't know if I would. I'd probably settle for a poly cotton blend.
She also suggests a very short stitch and a iron on interfacing that bonds at a very low temperature so you don't melt the fabric.

I finished the shirts and sent them home with the little boys smiling! everyone thought they looked great it was worth all the work. But I am still working on the bermuda shorts. Husband talked me into making the treasure map appliques on side seam pockets that the boys could cram full of "stuff" instead of just sewing the appliques directly on the shorts. I chose not to do the other side a compass but instead took the pirate ship, from the fabric, and appliqued that right on the other pocket front. I know they will like this! just have to put it all together and add elastic and will send those off in the mail tomorrow or Monday at the latest. I would encourage any of you who sew for kids or grandkids to try the applique designs from a novelty fabric. its not hard to adapt and looks fantastic. wish I had a photograph to show you.. I asked daughter to take a picture if she can...put I doubt if you she will remember busy days this summer for all of them.
