Hey all, I wanted to give you all a friendly wave as I head out on a road trip. We are leaving monday morning, but I was afraid I wouldn't get a chance to pop in here tomorrow. We will be driving a bit over 2000 miles - I guess this qualifies as a big road trip. I've spent the last several days shopping, re-shopping for what I forgot, and then going back for something else. The car is back from it's check up, and has 2 new tires & a full tank of gas. See you in a couple of weeks, and be sure to have lots of fun while I'm gone. Theresa

It definitely qualifies as a big road trip - even by Aussie standards. What are you up to? If you're too rushed just give us the goss when you get back. Hope you have so much fun that you won't miss us at all - even with the kids in the car. Pauline

We made it back! We logged right around 2500 miles, drove in 9 states, and the van still runs. Our first stopover was in Charlotte, North Carolina. We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite (for our family of 4) with what was listed as a full kitchen. I had to call a few times to get most of what I needed, but ran out to the store to buy a measuring cup. We spent 3 nights there, visiting museums in the area. Our very favorite was this one: https://www.schielemuseum.org/ in nearby Gastonia. We spent the entire day there, and the kids even went gem mining and serched for fossils. They each have an impressive bag of their finds. This museum had a planetarium, real live baby bison, a backwoods country farm, an indian village, and even more. Inside, the kids spent a lot of time at the hands on touch pool, much like a tidal pool with real live acquatic critters. Our second stopover was in Wheeling WV, where we stayed in a college dormitory (with a private bathroom!). It was a busy weekend, but not much to tell. We had heard about Cabelas http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/content/home/ghome.jsp?rid=0180101070502&cmCat=perf&cm_ven=performics&cm_cat=Google&cm_pla=brand_brand_general2&cm_ite=cabelas., so we stopped by. It was impressive, and we picked up a new jacket for DS who had lost his a while ago. Our third stopover was uneventful but a nice overnight stop in Wytheville VA, where the hotel was litterally next door to a horse farm. Our last stopover was in the Smoky Mountains, in Bryson City North Carolina. We rented a cabin for a week, and visited the Smoky Mountains National Park. Here is where we stayed: http://www.settlersmountain.com/cabins.htm It was a very nice cabin, and we even had free use of laundry facilities. The most fun we had was in the Smokies. We also went to the Tennessee side and visited Forbidden Caverns, http://www.forbiddencavern.com/index.html It was very cool! My dd thought she would be afraid, but she had a great time, except when they turned the lights out to show you how dark it is. We did a bit of hiking, played in creeks, visited a working restored mill that grinds corn and wheat, and yes, I bought a bag of each but haven't baked with it as yet. We also did some geocaching, and one required us to count the supports of the 6 bridges we would cross on a specific hiking trail. Unfortunately, we learned quite a ways into the hike that there was a very steeep, narrow uphill 1/2 mile climb. We had to walk behind each other, as there was no way to walk side by side, and I held my dd so tight I thought she would have bruises. But we did it, and the hike down was less perilous and a lot more fun! We met a few hikers on the way, and when we reached the top of our climb, met 2 hikers who had just climbed up from the opposite direction. It made me feel better to note that they looked as uncomfaortable as us! We viewed quite a few beautiful waterfalls, hauled our flabby bodies up to Clingman's Dome, picniced on the Appalachian Trail, and discovered wonderful "Quiet Walkways" next to pull outs in the park. We mostly had good weather, although We were caught in the most violent rain storm I have ever encountered on the high way. It was pretty intense, and you couldn't see the tail lights of the car in front of you unless they had their 4 way flashers on. Our pictures are on hubby's laptop, and I haven't figured out how I'm gonna get them. Actually, I just figured out what I can do, but it is too late tonight to start that project! Anyway, we had a great time, and after being on the road for 2 weeks with the family, would have to say there is no place like home! Theresa

Sounds like a great holiday Theresa - look forward to the pictures. Isn't it amazing these days when we can do things like that - show photos across the world. With all that distance and time though I bet you are glad to be back. Although there'll be no relaxing I guess until you catch up with the laundry. Pauline
