The lady/acquaintance that runs a dress shop in town passes on to me sewing alterations/projects, etc. that she either has no time to deal with or are just too big a project.

I was approached by a gentleman/acquaintance (it's a very small town) to make the following which I suppose fell into both catagories.

http://www.ray-way.com/tarp-nettent/index.shtml

It looks like a project that might be fun to do. I met with the guy this afternoon and he gave me the kit he'd ordered for the tent/tarp along with a fair sized book about it. The kit cost some $80.00 plus and jI'm guessing it must be the fabric that's so expensive. It's a nylon/silicone and is extremely lightweight.

Should be interesting and I'll have to figure out how to come up with an amount to charge him. Luckily he didn't ask for an estimate. I have till the end of the month. I'm sure I'll come up with a fair price.

Too cool! I've made hunting vests before but never made a tent/rain fly. Let us know how it goes. I'd probably charge by the hour too.

I'm almost done with this tent/tarp thing as I've come to call it. It's been so strange. I can compare it to sewing silk or satin as far as the fabric's concerned. It's silicone/nylon and I now have a piece that's 3 yards long and about 3 1/2 yards wide that I'm working with. It's like having an ultra slippery parachute on my lap.

I messed and messed with the tensions since the thread is so very thick. Goes against all rules with such ultra light fabric. Finally got it with a much lower top and bobbin tension. The stitch looks pretty darn good. I tried my differential feed foot but that seemed to make things more complicated and I'm not having trouble (amazingly) getting even seams.

The strangest thing has been the instruction book that came with the pieces of fabric and thread. It's written for someone who's NEVER sewn a stitch (or as Kevin said, it's written for MEN! sorry, guys.)

There is an entire paragraph (with illustration) describing how to insert and align a pin to hold the fabric together. Describing the flat fell seam took up 4 pages, etc. etc. They offset the fabric instead of trimming one side of the seam.

At times I've gotten very confused only to realize that it's really as simple as pie. It's not like reading a pattern at all. They talk about inches rather than yards and rarely use sewing terms.

Anyhow, it's a fun project and I should get it to the guy this afternoon. He was so excited. Looks like I'll be charging about $65.00.

I'd ask you to post a picture but unless you set it up it probably wouldn't mean a lot.

Sounds like a good set of instructions. I've got/seen "how to sew" books that aren't as detailed as that.

Do you know why they sell it as a kit instead of made up?

Hey Pauline!

It's a small home business that sells online kits. I'm sure they don't want to hassle it. I don't know why anyone would want to buy the kit. It sure seems like it'd be a lot cheaper to just buy one of these things.

I don't know about camping things so maybe this one is just unique.

Well, it's turning out to be a lot of work. Hardly seems worth it for $65.00 but just how high can I go? I've got about 8 hours into it and I've still got 14 loops and things to attach to the outside!

I contacted the website and asked them if they could give me a fair price to charge or what the average time is to make one and then I suppose I'll be covered no matter what they advise.

Oh, go to the website above and you can see what it looks like. Pretty simple design actually.

Yeah I had a look. I'm not at all sure why somebody would buy one unless they planned to stitch it up themself. There is almost certainly a similar product "ready made" available for considerably less than buying a kit and having a professional make it up for you. Unless the fabric is totally unique. Or the client doesn't want to contribute to Asian sweatshop labour.
