Thursday moring at 11:30 a.m., I'm undergoing back surgery for the herniated/ruptured disk in my low back. They are not going to remove the disk, the surgeon is only going to trim off the part of the disk that is herniated and then inject some kind of solution in the part remaining between the vertebrae that will cause it to form scar tissue and connect with the rest of the fiberous ring that is still in the front part of the disk. He is also going to scrape part of the bone where the root nerve has been impinged for the last 9 months to give it more room. I'm not looking forward to this surgery, but I am looking forward to not be in contiual pain and hopefully getting back to a normal life (whatever that may be -- I think I've forgotten what life is like without constant pain). I"m being admitted to the hospital at 9:00 a.m. and will be there for a couple of days, I guess.

I'm sure it will be worth the anxiety over the surgery. You'll be good as new and stronger.

Good Luck. You've got a bunch here pulling for you.

Patsy, when you are through, I have 11 of 12 bad lumbar vertabra. My disks are disolving. I'd like to know where you went, how you liked your dr, the hospital, everything...I need to be looking for someone to try to do something (if possible) for me. Write me at <email address removed for privacy> when you get around to it and feel like it...no urgency..took me 27 years to get a doctor to admit there was a problem.

Thanks to all of you for your positive thoughts and prayers. My surgery went very well on Thursday and the doctor gave me the choice of staying the night at the hospital or coming home which I did at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday evening. I'm doing good. Of course, I'm black and blue in a lot of places as one normally is after surgery. The top of my right hand where they put the ivs in pre-op and mt back, of course, around the surgical site but the worst is the inside of my left wrist; we can't figure out what they put in there, but it was something big and thet must have just shoved it in during the surgery because there wasn't anything there when I went to sleep or wokd up. I'm on pain meds, of course, but I'm up walking around, showering, etc. The actual surgical site only has a butterfly bandage on it and is right at my waistline on my back.

It makes you wonder what they do to you while you're under doesn't it. I know a theatre nurse who has told me of the fairly rough and casual way that patients are treated on the table.

Glad to hear that things are going well - hope they continue to improve and that the worst is now behind you. http://bestsmileys.com/exercising/13.gif

Glad to hear you are doing well Patsy, I missed this post when you posted it. They have come a long way in 28 years. I had back surgery back in 1979 and it was no picnic. They removed a disk and left one in there that was herniated but not bad enough to take out which I thought was silly while they had me under take them both out but he said it was a longer recoup so he just did the one. I haven't had any problems with the other one all this time but I don't pick up anything I shouldn't. Take care and listen to the doctors and keep your back strong. As you know everything affects your back when you move. Even brushing your teeth pulls on your back. Did know that until it hurt. :dave:
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Patsy - so glad to hear that your surgery went well!!! be sure not to overdo too quickly even though you feel better. Take it easy and get as much pampering as possible. Maybe before too long you can finish that beautiful quilt. When you are feeling better let's do an Okie lunch again.
Prayers and well wishes

The surgery itself wasn't all that bad and I'm doing good except I can't sit very long without it hurting. Dh is bringing our vinyl ring back home from his office this evening and I'm going to try that but otherwise, I'm moving around the house doing a few little things to keep myself occupied. DH has been wonderful and I couldn't ask for any better care and pampering than I'm getting but I'm sure it's gonna end in a couple of weeks when he has to have his right hip worked on. They are going to go into the bursar sac in his right hip and clean out the inflammation so I'm sure it'll be my turn to do the pampering and waiting on.

Susan and Pam I'll be more than ready for a day out by the time dh has his hip surgery and is able to move around again but I'm also scheduled to go back to work 4 hrs a day in a couple of weeks to finish out my time until I retire Sept. 1.

Patsy....have you ever tried an ergonomic chair? I had herniated my disc shoveling snow....could only sleep kneeling against the couch.....very unpleasant experience.

Anyway, the ergonomic chair was a lifesaver as I had projects I had to finish working at the computer.

Glad your surgery is over and you're on the mend.

Patty I have the magic vinyl inflatable ring that is working wonders for sitting. Sitting is something that will gradually become more comfortable as my disk heals and the muscles strengthen around the vertabrae. I've gotten a little bit of sewing done today so I'm coming along quite nicely at this point, I think.

I went on my first outing since my surgery this afternoon with dh to home depot and dollar general. I was okay but was ready for some mild pain med when we finally got home and have been lounging in my pjs at dh's instance since we came home letting him wait on me and take care of me. I still have another week of not being allowed to do very much except feed myself, etc. I was surprised that I did have some pain from just walking around for awhile. I thought I had a bandage on my back at the surgical site but dh says that it was just a liquid bandage over the stitches and that is beginning to disslove as I shower.

Man, that first outing after surgery can really rob you of your strength! Give yourself a little time to rest before you try it again. Glad to see you are getting stronger though!

Too bad you didn't venture to Crest and Sam's! I might have run into you. The crowds were pretty bad. I got caught in that terrible downpour at Sam's.

Wow! I saw Patsy yesterday! She looks like a MILLION!! You'll NEVER guess where (Hancocks)!

Patsy, I was 1/2 yard short on that fabric but I managed to get it cut out because the usable portion of the fabric was 50 inches wide. I only have to decide what to do with the undercollar where I will probably just use a solid color (white). I have some racket cloth that I think will work fine, eventhough it doesn't have spandex.

You had several nice fabrics yesterday Pam -- refresh my memory on which one you were short on. I loved the brown paisley looking one. We need to get together with Susan very shortly to relax and catch up. The doctor released me today to go back to work 4 hours a day on Monday for a week and then 8 hours a day as can be tolerated thereafter until August 17th when I have my final post-op visit. They were extremely pleased that I have done so well but think it is normal that I'm still having some pain if I bend or twist the right way or lay in the same posiiton too long. The P.A. says that is to be expected as all the muscle, tendon tissue, nerves, etc. are still pretty irritated and swollen but having intermitent pain will decrease as the healing process continues. I can drive again but I just can't lift, vacuum, mop, bend, twist or sit in one place or position for more than an hour at a time. It is so good to be mobile again without pain!

I thought you were moving extremely well for soon after surgery.

You know that 1920's glamour fabric that I had bought from Helen's a couple years ago. It was so high but I just loved it so I bought 2 yards. I brought it home and my older daughter hated it (it is 1920's glamour girl heads running both direction interlocked), a stretch twill or something similar with a velour overlay to form the ladies. It is great. The fab was 50 inches wide, not 60 or 45 which I had amounts for...It was close but I got everything but the undercollar cut out so I cut them out of white stretch twill. It'll have a big white shanked button on the front. She has gained weight so I've had to go up to a size 16 for her. I made View B (link below).

I cut it out last night and finished all but the button today...stopped to spend the evening with my husband. I hate to do buttons late at night.

http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M5276.htm?tab=jackets_coats&page=1

I bought the red dot challis and red (plain to make this)..

http://simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=3780

The brown paisley along with the lavendar poly and bright orange chiffon (all only $2 a yard) were all bought for blouses to go with her suits.

I took her in Sunday and bought fabrics to make a couple of 2 piece swimsuits. She also managed to talk me into a cute orange blouse to go under her black suit for OSU business spirit days. I had just made it up in white eyelet for her and she liked it...really cute made up!

http://www.butterick.com/item/B4988.htm?tab=tops&page=2

I also bought some really bright chalis for $3 a yard to make this...

http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M5094.htm?tab=dresses&page=3

view D. I just made view B in a pink floral chalis and sent it to Stillwater with her on Tuesday. Cute pattern!

I also bought several yards of lace and several patterns. The only thing I bought that wasn't a steal was buttons. Anyway, I made a killing at Hancocks. It didn't look like you had much more than zippers and thread when I saw you. Did you find anything interesting?

My daughter loved it too! I was delighted to find the pattern was a dollar. Although the fabric they had used in the store was on sale, I couldn't find another color (plaid seersucker) that I liked as well so I decided to go "Lucy" with the red with white dots!

Ya'll don't have to row over here..I'm on the hilly side of town (and sure glad I am). You just need a weed wacker or a lawn mower to find the house from all the fast growing grass and weeds! Isn't this rain something?

I used to shop the Britton Hancocks all the time too when I worked at Hertz! I really liked the lay out of that shop! I'm sure it will be missed. I guess they thought everyone would go to Britton or to NW Highway.

Pam I like all of those patterns and the fabrics. You are one "sewing diva" girl!!! Your daughter is going to be the envy of the campus. How about a "swamp buggy" girls. I was beginning to feel like dh would have to build us one. Pam I was looking for about 1/2 yard of their good whilte interlock knit and when I took the bolt to the cutting table the lady said "can you wait just one minute" and she came back with about 3/4 of a yard that had been put in the remant bin which ended up being about $3.50 total vs. $8.99 a yard. I take a drive over there tomorrow to pick up a Simplicity pants pattern that I want and really don't feel like waiting until Simplicity goes on sale again so I'll just go ahead and get it for the 40% + my 10% discount.

Susan and Pam we could always get together at Panera Bread on 29th in the new Town Center in Midwest City.

Wow! What a deal!

The Simplicity patterns were 10 for 10 that day we were there. I found out by accident. I thought that the McCalls and Vogue were all that were on sale.

Okay Pam and Susan when are we going to get together? There is another store in town that has fabric, but it is a quilt shop. It's in Decker Plaza on Air Depot north of 15th Street. By the way, if there is anyone else reading this forum that lives in the Oklahoma City, Moore, Norman, Edmond, Choctaw, Edmond, etc. area, please join us. We would love to meet you and get to know you.

We'll take anyone....it doesn't matter when. I can come almost any day in July. Sometime after the first of Aug I'll have my dgd back so then I'll be limited to a Sun afternoon or a Sat.

I didn't know there was another in town (well, except for Hobby Lobby). That's what gets when you say there are absolutely others, right?

I forgot about Hobbby Lobby. The last time I was in there, they had the fabric department all torn apart and I inquired if they were doing away with their fabric and the young lady working in there said no, they are expanding it. I really need to take a trip to Hobby Lobby. It's only another 2 minutes west of Hancock Fabrics. Thanks Pam for reminding me about Hobby Lobby!

My schedule is a little hectic, but not too bad. I can do most Saturdays during the day. But several Sat evenings my youngest DD does a tumbling exhibition at the yard dawgz. I can do Mon, Wed, Fri, after 3:30. But Tues and Thurs are usually shot. Sundays are really hectic, too. Sorry gals, kids at home.
I forgot about Hobby Lobby, too. Ours in Norman relocated to the old Target building. It does not have near the fabric section that the old one had. I am hoping that once they get everything in order that it will expand.
Can't wait!!

my2girlies did you get your "Futuie" back in working order yet? Saturdays are the best days for me kind of afternoonish. DH likes for me to be home to have dinner with him in the evening and I try to do that except on Quilt Guild and quilt group meeting nights.

I finally decided on a cute blouse pattern for that brown paisely, Patsy...

(The blue floral one Vb).

I forgot to cut the neckline piece so I didn't finish it today. Just have to do that and the collar, a little hand work and the button holes. It is very cute.

Any Sat. afternoon should be OK for me...just let me know when.

I'm getting ready to make New Look 6593. I fell in love with View E.

Very cute skirt! What material are you using. Yes I got my machine back. They were quite fast and even called to explain what had happened. I have been doing a little sewing for my great niece. she wanted some "comfy-cozies" as she calls them. translation - elastic waist pants with tees embelished to match.
