Hello everyone and welcome to our weekly newsletter.

I have been busy these past couple of weeks. My husband and I purchased a fixer-upper house and we have been renovating the inside quite extensively. With a lot of help from trades and labourers it is coming together. This brings me to my treasure hubby brought home when they were tearing out the flooring.

CANADIAN EATONS CATALOGUE 1946:
While tearing up the floors my husband found a lot of old newspapers and old photos. They also found an old Eatons catalogue from the spring of 1946. Inside were all sorts of goodies. Everything from fabric to patterns to chenille bedspreads to livestock spray and laxative tablets.

The fabric was pictured in colorful one inch squares with descriptions. Here is an example.

Rayon Florals. A printed rayon fabric, evenly woven, suede-like finish quality that shirrs and gores gracefully and drapes softly. About 38" wide. Price per yard 59 cents.

Printed Pique. From over the Border comes this fine Waled dainty Cotton Pique. These gay designs can make even the simplest style a success in sun frocks, play suits, skirts, dresses. About 36" wide. Price per yard 59 cents.

There were chenille bedspreads for $12.95 and all wool trapper blankets for $22.00 They weighed 12 pounds!

Simplicity patterns were 25 cents. Butterick patterns for children were 15 cents, little sun dresses and bonnets.

Some of the prints were so cute. Cowboys with horses and guns for boys, tiny florals for girls and something I have never heard of was Hollywood patterns for coats and jackets. All wool solid colors were $2.39 and 54" wide.

I had so much fun looking thru these pages and seeing all the things they offered.

The pages are quite stained and there are some tears. I think I will keep these in a safe, dark place. I have about ten pages or so that can be enjoyed. Oh yes, a whole box of chocolates was 71 cents. My, my how times have changed.

BATHING SUIT COVER UP:
The warm weather is here and with that comes bathing suits and cover ups. I have the simplest idea for a cover up. Mine is a piece of light, flowy fabric 60" wide by 36" long. It is a border print which makes it even prettier. Simply roll hem the four edges or narrow hem on your machine. That's it. It can be tied under your arms or at the waist for a longer cover.

Perhaps these measurements are not quite what you want, but that is a good base to start with. Make one with the same colors as your bathing suit. Kids love them too. Little girls feel so grown up swishing around in their own coverup.

SEWING TIPS:
Yesterday marked the first day of summer. At last some sunshine for everyone. Our spring has been very cold and dismal. With the nice weather, everyone is outside. Do not plan any complicated or difficult sewing projects. Stick to shorts, capris and T shirts. They are quick to make, comfortable and you can get back out into the sun.

If you are like me you are thick waisted. Middle age brought me that, some wrinkles and an attitude. If you are the same, do not wear a belt. Yoked waistlines are not flattering either. Forget about your waist and keep the details on your upper torso and arms. I love bracelets so I wear them with longer jackets and tops. Collars and pockets on my tops also take the attention away from the waistline.

IN CLOSING:
I hope you enjoy this little newsletter. I am trying to finish up a blouse and capris from a rayon/linen blend I found on the dollar table at our local chain fabric store. Until next week, have fun, stay well and enjoy a little sewing on the side.
