Hi all. it has been awhile since I have been here. I really could use some advice on making and sewing vinyl table cloths. Never have attempted this. What would be the best machine needle and thread to use? I wonder if there is a easy way to do finished hems on vinyl as well. Thanks for any and all help

You don't have to hem vinyl -- just cut it straight.
For looks a serged edge might be nice.

I'd use regular thread and a teflon foot. There are leather needles you can use but I'd probably just use a Universal or sharp needle. Lengthen your stitch. Remember that once the needle goes through the vinyl you have a hole so you can't afford many mistakes. If you don't have a teflon foot, you can use paper. Adding machine paper is very nice because you don't have to stop and reposition or cut it but it is sometimes hard to remove. When I was in high school and everyone was wearing vinyl I made several jumpers using typing paper, but then it took forever to get all the little pieces out of the stitches. The things that we have to use now are so much better.

I make tablecloths from the flannel backed vinyl for my brother's picnic table, because it is 10 feet long.. I buy 4 yards and all I do is serge the edges and round the corners off ..(I use a 9 inch plate for that pattern) I have never had any problems with stitching the vinyl on my serger.. My brother says you cannot buy that size tablecloth.. I don't mind making them for him.. Gives me a nice item to give him for his birthday .. LOL...

Last year I made 10 flannel backed vinyl tablecloths for our church's youth dept. I just serged a 3 thread flat hem around the edges and looped the threads back thru when finished. It took me 2 hours to complete them. They were 12 ft long and 4ft wide. I used an ELX 705 size 14 needle in my serger. Hope this helps.
