Yep...tomorrow I'm heading out to the Vermont Quilt Festival. It starts on Friday, but I'm heading off tomorrow with a friend and we're making a slight detour to pick up my niece then on Friday morning it's over the border and down to the show.

I know that my niece is very excited...this will be her first visit to a quilt show. She's only started quilting last year and is totally hooked. We're planning on a great weekend! :bolt:

Have a wonderful, safe trip Judy. I can't wait to hear about the quilts and everything you get to see. The heat wave is suppose to break, so you should have great weather too!

Have a great time. I went to Quiltfest in Birmingham this past weekend. I wish there was another quilt show near me this summer.

Well I arrived back home at 12:20 a.m. this morning. Had a great time and did I ever spend...but I got some super bargains. Everything is still in the bags but I plan on stacking up my new stash and taking a pic or two. Hoping to make some fellow quilters of mine jealous! :bg:

We didn't go for any classes since this was a hastily planned trip...maybe next year. And yes, all three of us are planning on returning next year. We loved the quilts on display! Just some gorgeous work! And of course, the vendors were a big draw for these poor :Canada:ians who are paying big bucks for fabric and such up this side of the border. But our most fun was in visiting the quilt shops around the area. And we lucked out at a couple of really good sales!!!

One of my favourite parts of the trip was encountering Cynthia England. She had a booth and was demonstrating her paper piecing technique. I remember seeing her demo her method on a Kay Woods episode a few years ago. When I mentioned that show, she told me a story. While on the show she had said that she had pieced a honkin' big flower. Her husband told her I can't believe you said "honking". For the next Christmas her husband gave her a honkin' big flower...a big flower taped to a horn. I did buy her book and got her to autograph it too.

We all knew that we had spent more than our limit and were prepared to declare & pay the duty & taxes. But there was a super nice guy working the border where we crossed. He only asked how much we spent...we said the amounts expecting to be told to pull over, etc....then he asked what we bought. All three piped up "fabric" and he just let us go with a "have a good trip"!

Oh Judy, what fun! Glad you were able to hit the sales.

Maybe the border worker knows a sewer/quilter and understood

Oh my gosh... I just calculated how many yards of fabric I actually bought this weekend. It was a lot. But on the other hand, I got fabric to finish off my Red & White Block Swap quilt...so I don't have to look for that any more.

Here's a pic of all my purchases!

The three centre piles were purchased from a shop we just happened to find when driving by on our way to where we stayed.

Yep there is...but only because the shop that we drove by was having a Clearance sale...everything was 60% off with a 2 yd minimum. As you can see, I definitely took her up on that... I bought 84 yds at that store...(she says hanging her head). And the first pile on the right was from a store that was having a 15% end of bolt sale. She had a shelf of fabric for $1.99 a yard. I found 2 bolts of Robert Kaufman fabric on that shelf...and finished those bolts so the 15% applied too...basically got that pile for $1.69/yd. Those RK fabrics would have been approx. $18/meter here...and a meter is only 3" longer than a yard. Saved myself a bundle for losing 3"...LOL

And the YLI 30 wt. threads were a show special...$2 a spool. Up here they go for around $5 each.

With those savings...yep...still $ in the bank! :bg:

What a HAUL!! and.....what great prices!

My daughter was presenting at a conference in Montreal and said the weather was in the 90's..... How was it for you in Vermont?

Hmmmmm.....I'm wondering if I shouldn't grab a girlfriend and hit the show next year?????

Patty, the weather was in the 90's up until Wed. last week. Thankfully it got cooler once the thunderstorms went thru Wed evening. We were actually cold up at our lodgings...hadn't brought much cool weather gear. LOL

I don't know what you generally pay for things and how you would find the prices at the show. But for Canadians...it was fantastic! I don't think that we will get the 60% clearance sale next year as I think the woman is liquidating her stock and closing up the business. But that was totally a great deal. She asked us what we pay for fabric and almost fell over when we said it usually starts at $15/meter. I don't remember seeing much over $9.00 in her stock. I didn't buy anything that was over $8.50/yd and the least was $3.30/yd. She totalled it all up then deducted the 60%.

But to give you an idea of another bargain that we weren't able to take advantage of...a fellow Cdn from the Ottawa area that I met at the show bought a Janome 6600 for the show price of $1100. My friend had been pricing them here and the going price is around $2200 + our taxes which is approx. 15%. So for us that would have been a great deal...especially since the Cdn $ is now up. My friend will be saving her money and is planning for us to go back next year. Now her intension is to get a new machine down there. In the meantime I'm going to have my sister check out the duties etc. She used to work for a Customs brokerage firm and knows what to check out. We don't want any surprises getting it over the border if we do buy one...

http://bestsmileys.com/thumbs/7.gif Good for you. It looks like there is still plenty of room on the sofa for more pretties so you gotta go next year too. Glad you had a great time.

Yep, piney...definitely gotta go again next year. I thought of piling all the fabrics in a big stack...but I thought this layout would make my friends more envious. :bg:

You're from New England. Did you get to the show? There were a lot of vendors from VT & NH. I'm originally from Southern QC so VT is usually the closest place to go for a visit. And it only took us a couple of hours to get there once we crossed the border. Also, the timing of the festival this year was great as it was our long weekend too.
