Do you want or need a new sewing machine, but are having difficulty justifying the expense to your SO or DH? Running out of ways to save the pin money? Is the machine of your dreams ....just simply a machine you dream about? I was working at our LQS yesterday and the story was told by another shop owner of how a woman who was notorious for hiding her fabric purchases was able to take home a new sewing machine without her husband being any wiser to the situation. Seems she told the dealer to take the machine she had purchased to the quilt show and she would pick it up there. As the woman was leaving her home for the quilt show she told her husband of her desire to win the machine they were raffling. It then didn't seem odd that evening when she returned home with her new machine. LUCKY her! Now I wouldn't feel comfortable building my relationship with my honey on this kind of tactic, but I certainly had a really good laugh over the creativity this woman employed to bring the machine into her home. I simply am taking the passive route and just putting the picture of my dream machine under my pillow every night Patty

Patty, I had to giggle! At my old sales job I had earned a gift card that covered the price of a new Janome Decor sewing machine that I wanted for taking to classes,etc...so, I just bought the thing and did not say a word to my DH. I know, me bad!! I just set it up in my sewing sanctuary and never said a word about it. He probably thinks it is the "cheapy" $89 one I stupidly bought at Hancocks the year before and never used...by the way, his hobbies are much more expensive than mine so I always feel justified!! I knew women that would carry cross stitch supplies home in tampon boxes so their husband wouldn't look. Personally I wouldn't want to live with someone I had to sneak past or lie to. Not because I think it's wrong (probably is though) but because I'm a lousy liar. Dorothy |

Dorothy, I do agree with you. I don't really sneak stuff in...I carry it proudly in the house and just set it up! I am a "mid-life" first time bride used to just making decisions and purchases on my "own". If this had been a really "big" purchase like a car, I would have discussed it with him. The tampon box is really weird! I don't lie well either......I blush too much! sandy |

Now Dorothy....it would have to be a tampon box box for a blue whale or elephant in order to hide a machine. It's still good for a laugh. Patty

Great story! I can't lie either. Couldn't carry that off at all. I could never sneak anything past my dh. Don't have to luckily. He's always the one encouraging me to buy. My dh tends to want to know about everything. (He's nosy as hell in other words. :bg When I got my emb. machine he was right there learning how it worked. The same with the serger. I've left him in the dust since and not that he'd want to, but if left alone I think he could stitch something up with both machines and put an embroidery on it! Come to think of it, I'd love to see what he'd come up with??? Lennie |

Geez Patty, haven't you seen those Costco boxes of extra long, extra wide, super absorbant pads??? I think a small machine would fit............. Lennie |

I don't fib to mine but partly that's because I don't need to. He walks around oblivious to most things. Patterns, fabric etc. just aren't big enough to register. And although I buy a bit I'm always careful with money so it has a negligible effect on the budget. From time to time I get something I'm excited about and plonk it down in front of him to show off. He'll make all the right noises but isn't really interested. I'm the same if he tries to tell me about car parts or maintenance that needs doing. If I buy new clothes or have my hair cut or coloured he also has no idea. Maybe if I dyed my hair green. He would notice the machine though - the one I'm wanting/needing is rather expensive. We've talked about it - it's just a matter of time - I'd like it tomorrow though. Pauline

Pauline, my DH has as much interest in my sewing as yours! He DOES notice my haircuts/color, however and will oooh and aaaah my masterpieces but beyond that, I don't expect any more. He retreats to his "spousal avoidance center" (workshop) and I retreat to mine! (sewing sanctuary). I just need to look out the window beyond my sewing machine and I can see him out there futzing with another project, etc. It is not a bad thing! Coming out of my Rip Van Winkle sleep of 20 years in regard to sewing machines...I decided two years ago to replace my 1972 Singer from Junior High and go shopping!! Wow!! What an awakening!! After some discussion and making the pitch on "why" I wanted a sew/embroidery machine (not a cheap date!) DH said to go for it and the rest is history! I hope everyone who is passionate about their sewing gets the machine of their dreams... sandy |

That lady certainly was creative! I'm lucky as well because my husband has bought me my dream sewing machine--twice! After he bought the first one, Janome came out with a new upgrade, but I told him that I was waiting until they had improved their technology even more. When I was ready to buy the 10000, they had just come out with the 10001, so we got a good deal. I'm happy and don't even want to look at the 11000, although I could probably be tempted.... My husband also encourages me to go buy fabric. I usually have to have a specific project in mind when buying fabric, rather than just building a stash. |

I'm very fortunate also in that my dh encourages and adds to my sewing room. He just built me a thread stand for my embroidery machine that will hold 16 mini cones of my embroidery thread at one time. He made me a new portable ironing board when he saw that my old one made of particle board had died and looked like it was being devoured by termites!!! Although lately, he does question why I need more fabric when I have piles of new fabric in my sewing room that I haven't used for anything yet and he drove me on a 100 mile round trip to my favorite quilt shop and wrote a check for my Pfaff 2056 about a month ago without even questioning why I needed to trade in my 5 year old 2044 and told me if I wanted the 2170 to go ahead and buy it. So, I have no reason to hide whatever I buy for my sewing addiction. He is also very observant of what I'm working on in my sewing room most of th time. Patsy Patsy
