My mother use to make all of us girls dresses out of kettle cloth. Do they still make kettle cloth or is there a fabric similar to it? Those dresses wore like iron.

Does it EVER! It is one of my all-time favorite fabrics!!!!! You don't see it very often. I'll occasionally see it at Wal Mart. I don't recall seeing it at Hancocks.

I had a dress I made as a junior in high school about 1969, basic empire dress with an a-line skirt, military style that buttoned down the front, double top stitched. I wore that garment into the work force after college. The last time I remember wearing it was 1976. Everything looked wonderful except for the buttons that were a little worse for wear...still washed well, could be hung up out of the dryer and worn without a second's bother. I had several things made out of it but that dress, a denium blue with orange top stitching was my favorite!

Thanks for your reply...

I guess I'll just have to look a little closer when I go to Wally World or shop there more often.

I wasn't even sure if they made it anymore.

I remember that type of material. Boy, it was almost like a light canvas.

Isn't broadcloth similar??

Broadcloth is lighter. Sailcloth was close but Kettle cloth had a special weave that looked a bit like linen.

Maybe a bit in weight, but I think of it as a little lighter in weight, it is crisp. Even in the "olden" days when everything still needed to be ironed, it wasn't a fabric that needed a lot of ironing. My favorite was denium in color but it came in several colors. I even had some neon green at one point...and when I was pregnant I had a light blue jumper made of it. It is just a great sport weight fabric.
