I really like this pattern from the "pattern companies listening..." thread.

But I would need a size 12 and the smallest it comes is 18. Do you think it would be too difficult to downsize it?

There is a similar pattern in misses sizing but it's not quite the same. It's shorter, the short sleeves are split and fuller, I think, both things easily changed. The big difference I see is the flounce on the bottom one seems much, well, flouncier. And I think that will be the hardest to change as I don't know the pattern for the top one, without buying both patterns.

If it was me I would just go with the smaller pattern and change the embellishments -- ruffles, sleeves. It seems like that would be easier than resizing the pattern. Unless you like all that extra pattern fitting work.

Looking at the drawings the larger sized one has a different fastening - two ties , one of which goes through a buttonhole and around the back of the blouse. The smaller one has a fastening at a lower point on the side (Ok if you have a smaller bust) but does not tie araound the body, simply at the side.

Personally I, like Dorothy, would go with the smaller size and just change the frilly bits as needed. I think it looks more "flouncy" because the waist is thicker on the larger size.

Remember to check your measurements with a tape measure against the pattern size and not by ready to wear size!

Most of the pictures are drawings anyway so the differences may be more in the stylization than the actual shirts.

That isn't exactly a size 18 either that is woman's sizing and it is a little different than "misses sizing". You really don't want to try to down size that pattern...trust me. It is easier to read the pattern company's own explanation than for me to try...

It wouldn't be that difficult to recreate the little differences between those patterns...give that a try.

Thanks all, I think you convinced me to do what I really knew I should do. The flounce on the smaller size looks (yes, it is hard to tell from just sketches) as if it is bigger than the larger size. It seems to reach from the neck edge to just about the shoulder seam. And I agree, the smaller size looks like it fastens lower on the side, though that is maybe because the whole length of that one is shorter (25" opposed to 23 " in size 18 of the smaller pattern). I think I can make the ties work the same way on the smaller as on the larger. Paroper and Magot, I did check the sizes and those websites. In RTW I am an 8. This going to be fun, better go get the flower watering done so I can alter and cut and sew.

No, what I was wanting you to see is the description of the sizing...that woman's sizing is proportionally different, which is what the information says. I wasn't wanting you to look at the measurments. The site explains the differences between the mature woman's figure and the younger woman's figure. These have been the mainstay of all sizing, RTW and pattern sizing for generations.

Yes I did look, just did not explain adequately. I used to sew woman's sizes for my Mum.
