I went to purchase fabric today for a dress I am planning on starting (sometime in the future, well at least sometime this year lol) and got stuck because the store couldnt help with converting the fabric measurements.

The sleeve on the envelope states for 150cm wide fabric that I need to purchase 5.9 m of fabric. The problem is the chiffon that I want to use on comes in 112cm widths.

I dont have the pattern with me to lay it out, and I am at least an hour away from home until I return there tomorrow.

The fabric store has noted the shade of chiffon that I want until I can return there hopefully tomorrow.

So does anyone know of a website that would list the type of conversion that I require?????

Many thanks in advance.

Get your calculator... Multiply the 5.9 X the 1?? ... then, divide the narrower number 112 (I think it is 112) into the answer from the first calculation and That is how much fabric you should need.. In other words 150 X 5.9 = ????? divided by 112 = no. of meters..

Be very careful when you convert you must take into account the pattern pieces & will they fit on that width fabric. If the skirt is full you might need 2 lengths of fabric to lay it out instead of 1 so that will take a lot more. I have made this mistake before. If you have the pattern the best thing to do is lay it out on a sheet or another piece of fabric marked out at that width & then measure what you need.

I agree about laying it out and finding out for sure first. It's so easy if you have a piece of unused yardage that you can use as a guideline. I've also been known to bring my pattern pieces and lay them out on the fabric right at the cutting table--In fact the cutting associate was the one who recommended it, and she even adjusted the layout for me and found a way to save me a bundle.

book mark this site - lots of useful charts

I find it hard to believe store wouldn't help you. There is a chart in the back of almost all pattern books. It sounds like staff are not aware of their customers needs and what is available.

Good luck

I bought some 30" fabric for a pattern that called for 45" and found the front piece was too wide at the bottom to fit the fabric width, so I had to do some adjusting and narrowing of the skirt to get it to work.

Nice chart Nancy!

I just cut a pattern out of 2 7/8 yds. of 45" fabric. The pattern only called for 60" (sorry I don't do metric) 2 1/2 yds. Going by the chart I would Have bought 3 3/8yd. If you don't mind having extra use the chart. Keeping in mind what Laura said about the skirt width. You may have to piece the skirt or change it if it is a full skirt.
Also I have found that the charts don't work as well with childrens patterns.

Edit:
OK I just checked a pattern envelope, 150cm = 60" 115cm= 45"
