It happened yesterday. What we all fear so much here in our dried out environment. At about 2:30 a fire broke out about 1/2 hour from here. There was talk all over the scanner/radio we have. Scary, but still far enough away and heading away from us. By 3:00 another fire broke. (They're suspecting arson.)This one was just about 2 miles from us! Instantly my stress level skyrocketed. We've been through evacuations and catastrophic fires within the last few years and we DON'T mess around. As some of you know my dh is the town's fire chief. Where is he currently?? Fishing off Mexican waters not to return till Thursday morning. Luckily many from the dept. stopped by to see if I needed help or needed anything since they all knew I was alone. I've got this evacuation down pretty well by now. I know you're waiting for me to say that my sewing machine and serger were the first things I grabbed but in reality they were about the last when I realized I had more time. There are MUCH more important items and that's what homeowner's insurance is for, right? Well, the planes attacked the fire from the first and then agencies from all over the county came in. It was INCREDIBLE the help that arrived. There were so many retardant planes and water planes that it sounded like a war zone. Our house was in their direct path so it provided quite the entertainment once we realized things were going well and there was no immediate danger. All told there were 110 acres burned, no injuries, no structures lost and hundreds of exhausted humans. Boy, have I got a story for dh. Luckily he's got great people on the dept. he can count on. Lennie, I'm hoping everything is still okay out there. It's been so dry here this summer that we've had a few minor brush fires in our area. We're under a no-burn alert and no fireworks are allowed in our area. I was surprised to see a fireworks stand at a shopping center near by today. Some idiots will probably set the woods on fire. I don't understand why people are allowed to sell fireworks in the area if no one is supposed to shoot them. |

Lennie I'm glad everything is fine with you. Those poor people in Kansas is catching it with the flooding. It brought back all the bad thoughts from Katrina after I saw those poor people's homes submerged up to the eves. The heartland sure is taking a beating with all the rain. It's been dry here too but not like in some areas. We get some showers here but we still have a deficit of rain for the year.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Bama said I don't understand why people are allowed to sell fireworks in the area if no one is supposed to shoot them. Maybe it is like Pennsylvania where it is only legal to sell fireworks to people from other states. People from the other states have to go to Pennsylvania because fireworks are illegal in those states too!! So I wonder, where do people in Pennsylvania go to buy illegal fireworks. I just learned that tidbit a few days ago and was quite impressed by the whole concept. Dorothy |

Oh, I'm so sorry. There is nothing quite as scary as waiting to see what a raging fire will do! We are wetter here than we've ever been (I think...well, pretty close, anyway). We've already had 39" or so inches of rain at the official station), when we usually get 19 a year. The rivers are changing channels and the farmers are not just loosing their crops, they are loosing their land in the low areas. The river just a few miles from us has been over its flood stage by about 3 feet for several days, it is just now coming back to "normal". I can't remember the last time it rained on the 4th! Hopefully this is the beginning to the end of a 4 or 5 year drought and our fires (although we'll probably have fires in the fall because the grass is so thick and tall.) We would be happy to ship some much needed water to California if we could. Please stay safe. Let's hope that they catch the "fire starters" before they start too many this year! pam

Fireworks have been illegal in our county and many others in Ca. for many years. People can easily go to Mexico and buy them unregulated and cheaply. And they do. Idiots! I have great memories of neighborhood fireworks parties when I was a kid but it's just not worth the possible consequences. We're fine, thanks. I'll be unloading my little truck this morning but I'll still have my pile ready to go (probably in my sewing room) all summer. People (are) and have moved because of the anxiety each summer. It keeps getting worse and there's still so much to burn. Lennie |

My nephew and his wife were living in Temecula (spelling) until just a few years ago. He was transferred with hiw work. I remember how fearful I was for them and their family.

Temecula (you did just fine) is an hour from me and they are surrounded by hills covered by brush. It's pretty barren though but oh so HOT. I think it was last 4th of July that they had a decent fire there and my Mom and I were stuck in traffic for hours after I had picked her up for a visit and happened to come home that way instead of our usual route.
