What's the best way to get ruffles on jeans? I didn't know whether to put them on the inside so they hang from below, or outside so they hang in front... make sense? Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance! |

Put them behind the hem. You may even want to remove the hem, serge the edge, sew the ruffle to it, right sides together and then turn the whole thing up and stitch into place to get rid of some of the extra bulk. Remember though that a 3 inch ruffle sticks out so that you don't necessarily get 3 inches of length.

an alternative would be to make a ruffle that is gathered below the top so that you have a finished ruffle above and below the gather. In that case I would put it on the outside.

Thank you!! I'm going to practice tomorrow with some old jeans that I've cut above the knees (knees used to be there, now it's just holes!! LOL) to make capris. So, I'll serge the denim, sew the ruffle to it right sides together, turn it under and stitch it down. Or serge the edges (eliminates the need for a hem) and make a ruffle to sew on top. I'll play around and see what looks better. Thanks again for your tips! |

Ok, this was my first attempt. I think there's much room for improvement, but this was a practice run with some much loved pants anyway!! I just need to add more rick rack to the pink ruffle on the pants (I bought some today, but wrong shade). I think dd6 will love it! http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t96/tnmom25/DSC00008.jpg I used the sew to the top method and flip over. It worked great. I like that method since I try to use a serger to finish all of my seams. |
