I'm making a skirt and have decided to line it.

Rather than make a trip to the fabric shop -- that, I guess, is my third option -- I thought I'd use something I have laying around.

The skirt is a very light weight denim. At least that is what JoAnn Fabric's called it. It is indigo blue with little white flowers on it.

I have a light blue/grey kinda splotchy, watery fabric I can line it with.
Or black.
Neither will show through.

Which should I use? Is there a darker, lighter rule when it won't show through and is really just there to eliminate a slip?

I'd go black - I'm not sure what the "rules" are but I'd want something that didn't draw the eye if some of the lining were to show when I sat down. A dark solid colour shouldn't do that as much.

I hold my fashion fabric and lining, together, up to the sunlight to see if it will give me the desired effect. Choose whatever fabric makes you happiest. Only you know what's under your skirt.

I used some leftover flowered quilting fabric as the waistline facing and pocket lining on a black cordouroy skirt I made last winter. I got tired of looking at black thread on a black fabric. The pretty flowered fabric was easier to see and makes me smile when I put on the skirt.

I bought a khaki skirt from the outlet store of a major designer. The waistband and hem facing were from a really cute flower print. It gives the skirt a little "zip"! I was thinking or doing the same thing when I get back to sewing for myself.

I think I'll go with the black. That way I don't have to change the thread on my serger.

Well, I was going to say go with the light blue spotchy stuff, as I was thinking it would be kind of funky poking out under your sensible denim, kind of like wearing the red satin bra under the cotton blouse!

Funny you should mention that Laura - I was told a couple of days ago that red was the best colour bra to wear under a white top. Supposedly better than white or skin. Can't see it myself. Although that's the idea.

Well the black is in there now. Too late now. The black is in there. I just have to finish the top of the skirt with an elastic casing and waist band.
It looks pretty good, too.
