I recently had to help dd with a school project - making a flag. We bought some new fabric for the background and cut out the stars etc. on Heat n Bond (double sided fusible) and ironed them on.

As fast as they cooled the stars peeled straight back off - which raises the question. Do fusibles have a shelf life - or can sizing on new fabric affect adhesion? It did seem to stick okay to the older (washed) fabric that we used for the stars and I'd used it not that long previously and all was well so I suspect the sizing but just wanted to check.

I've been working off the same giant roll of Heat and Bond for years and haven't had that problem.
I do wash the fabric first -- just like the directions say.
And I sew the bonded piece down.
But I really think your problem is with the sizing.

Directions??

They went west long ago.

I did end up sewing it down but it detracted somewhat from the fact that she "made it all herself".

The fusibles are usually no good if the sizing has not been washed out of the fabrics.. But, I have better luck with Wonder Under by Pellon.. Every time I use Heat N Bond, it does not hold in big spots no matter how I treat it..!! I have never , never had a failure with wonder under pre-washed or not..

Don't think we have Wonder Under here - my local fabric shops range of fusibles is quite limited and the staff knowledge of what they do have is even more limited.

Many times I had to re-iron my fusables when I used heat n bond. I just assumed it was user error. When I used it, I never prewashed the fabric. I imagine it would have a much tighter bond with prewashed fabric.

Same here Pauline. Go and ask for Pellon and they give you a really weird stare. Even when I eventually found that they do sell it.
Cheers, Soph.

I found some Wonder Under - by accident - I followed one of the links on the site here:

http://www.busythimbles.com.au/vliesofix-wonder-under-p-626.html

Now that I know exactly what to ask/look for - I'll try Spotlight again - or if I'm feeling really brave I'll go into my LQS. They don't seem very friendly there - I always feel like they can't wait for me to leave as I'm not a quilter or part of their "group". :bolt: I'm glad all quilters aren't like that.

I did not mention before but, you can buy packages of Wonder Under or you can purchase it off the bolt by the yard.. That is usually with the interfacings by the yard..

In don't know if they have it in Australia Pauline, but Steam A Seam2 is the only fusible I use for applique.

We seem to lack a fair bit here but other things - like the wonder under, exist - with different names. I think I've seen Steam a seam as hemming tape - I wasn't really paying attention at the time.

I don't do a lot of appliques and what I have done I've always sewn (either by machine or hand) around the edges - it just frustrated me because I really wanted this to be dd's project from start to finish.

I usually get my double sided fusible from my local Janome dealer; they also happen to be a quilting shop (as well as wool, notions etc). I don't go to Spotlight if I can avoid it, after working there for 2 weeks I really don't like the place. I also feel better supporting small local business, especially as they tend to be more knowledgeable about their product.

I was in there again today (Spotlight) - not much else choice around where I live - except as I mentioned earlier the LQS who are pretty rude. Having been told in both a vague and uninformed way that they don't have it and also in a very confident manner that she's "never even heard of it" (different people on different occasions) - I found some today by accident. I was looking for some fabric and I saw a brochure for it in a holder near where I was standing - and a roll just a bit further on amongst an absolute mess of different products.

Don't need any ATM but I know where I can go now anyway.

Non-fusing happened to me recently...I had to use 3 separate heat/steam and cool cycles to make it really secure to my fabric.
Did you use steam? press cloth? I also thought because you say it came right up after cooling...any chance it had a film that needed to be removed first? like a covering? Just some silly thoughts!
good luck
