The only machine sewing I've done in many years has been sail repair and heavy canvas work using a Sailrite LSZ-1 machine. My husband and I spent two years sailing the South Pacific and we returned to shore life a year ago. Now, I'm very excited to be returning to the more creative side of sewing- something that I really enjoyed as a child, teenager and young mom. When I started researching sewing/embroidery machines, I somehow came across this excellent website/ sewing community. The more I read, the more inspired I became. Thanks everyone. I'm looking forward to participating. Angela |

Welcome, I am next door in Alberta. I just signed up recently myself and find everyone very nice and very helpful. My parents are sailers on a 34' Tartan, but I only go when they're at shore or I pray for no wind. I think you'll find lots of sewing projects more exciting than spinakers. I just took up quilting and can't even imagine doing anything else now. Again, welcome, Suzan |

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! So, in the past week since joining the forum, I've taken my 15-year-old-hardly-ever-used Elna serger out of storage, got it serviced and started trying to remember how to use it. I still have accessories for it that never came out of their original packaging and I have no idea what they are for. Now I remember why I never used it much - The threading and tension setting is so finicky that if everything isn't perfect it jams or threads break. I will have to schedule a refresher lesson. I'm sure the new sergers are much more user-friendly but I will make do with what I have because I have just splurged on a Bernina Aurora 440 with the embroidery attachment. It is supposed to arrive next week- can't wait. I've taken up sewing again (after many years of being too busy with my career) for two reasons: I need a creative outlet and I want to be able to sew my own clothes. The lack of choice and poor quality of ready-to wear clothes is very frustrating (of course I guess it's a sign of age when you go clothes shopping and can't find anything you like). I really like the idea for doing something that is both creative and practical. This forum is going to help me stay motivated because I don't know anyone else who sews. How does everyone stay engaged and motivated to develop their sewing skills ? |

Hi Angela and welcome. When I'm running low on motivation, a trip to the fabric store always gets me motivated. I'm a fabriholic and am addicted to the feel and smell of fabric and a fabric store. Patsy Patsy

Hi Angela, It doesn't take much for me to get motivated. I subscribe to several sewing magazines and have quite a large sewing library. Today in the mail I received 9 vintage sewing books that I found on the www.outoftheashescollectibles.com website. I also read lots of sewing blogs. One of my favorites is A Dress a Day. Erin writes lovely stories about different styles of dresses. She has 11 articles on the "secret lives of dresses" in which she gives a personality and story of a particular style of dress. They are wonderful to read. Also it helps to belong to a sewing guild or two or three. Happy Stitching! Marty |
