Hi,

I just bought a Kenmore sewing machine last week. It's one of the models manufactured by Janome, model 19233. This machine can quilt, and that was what I was looking for. I read many reviews online and it appears to be a decent machine. It was on sale for $350, regular price $450. So I bought the extended warranty, which covers everything for 5 years, including a yearly service call. Last time I paid $70 to clean my little Elna, which cannot quilt. I figuired that if I take the Kenmore 3 times to be serviced in those 5 years, the extended warranty is free.

I really hope this Kenmore is a decent machine. I couldn't bring myself to pay the thousands of dollars that other machines cost, even thought those machines are wonderful! Not until I make sure I'm serious about sewing and quilting.

Don't have them here - but I have a Janome. There is some sort of relationship between them.

Any reason you ask?

My first sewing machine was/is a Kenmore. I got it for my 16th birthday & used it for 16 years. We did get the extended warranty on it & it was serviced annually. Sixteen years later, I bought a Janome (it's 15 years old already!). No problems with either one. In fact I still loan the Kenmore out to people who sew rarely (Halloween costumes) or to friends that have projects to finish while their machines are being serviced.

I have a 3 Kenmores, one computerized, one not and one not set up right now. What is your question about the machines?

I bought a brand new Kenmore I've been using since my first son was born, way back in 1980. When I first used it it sounded like a machine gun so I took it back to Montgomery Wards.

They sent it out for repairs/servicing & I finally got it back 6 weeks later with oil dripping down the needle. Needless to say I'm the only one who has ever serviced it since. No problem with it since then.

So what is your Kenmore question???

You bought a "KENMORE" at Montgomery Wards? I thought that line was exclusive to only Sears!!!!

I also have this model 19233. Just wondering what everyone thought of their machine. I like this machine- I have had it 1 1/2 years.

I have had some difficulty with the twin needle though. Anyone have any tips. The thread gets twisted and breaks a lot.

As far as I know, all Kenmore machines are Janome and have been since the late 70's (only back then it was New Home). I think that Kenmore can change some of the specs, but Janome makes them pretty much as the rest of their machines, just as Whirlpool does with the Kenmore washers and dryers (I think that is Whirlpool...been a while.) Janome machines have a pretty loyal following.

My Kenmore which my DH gave me in 1975 worked until 2001 when I traded it for my Pfaff 7570. The only reason I traded was some workmen had dropped it and broke the housing. It worked great for all types of sewing. I do have an older model Kenmore flatbed machine circa 1942 as it is my back-up machine as well as my New Home Greyhound (circa 1919) and my Pfaff 1381. I'm a machine junkie. My teenage DD has a White 935 and a Brother PE-100. She uses the 1381 for most of her sewing so I'll probably give it to her some day. Right now, I'm thinking of getting a smaller lightweight machine for classes. However, DH doesn't want me to bring any more machines home as I don't have a sewing room and there's no more space. I did tell him that if I found a Singer Featherweight (space or not) I was bringing it home. Happy Stitching!

Yeah, but back then they were made by a different machine, the same as mine bought in 1974. They were a honey of a machine. I've looked all over for a replacement for mine. I still have 4 boxes of accessories and cams. Sears broke the take up lever on mine and wouldn't/couldn't replace the machine ...oh, I wanted just an old used one just like it so bad...and they wouldn't/couldn't repair it..... I cried and cried and tried to get them to do something but they just wouldn't. So...between that and a problem with a washer and dryer that they couldn't fix...I stopped doing business with them in 1991 (when it all happened.)

I have had some difficulty with the twin needle though. Anyone have any tips. The thread gets twisted and breaks a lot.

Some machines have two thread guide loops just before the needle...the usual one, and a smaller one to the right, just for use with double needles. If you only have one thread guide loop there, try leaving the thread for the right hand needle outside of that last thread guide.
Take care,
Donna

Also, thread one side all the way before you thread the other.
