I have shared a while back that I would like to retire but will need to continue to suplement my retirement income in some way. Gradually the Idea of "Belinda's Botique" has been developing. I have been inspired by each one of my wonderful new sewing family here. I have one purse designed and a matching hat. I just finished a swimsuit that I will display and take custom orders for. I know that is not much of a start but I already have an order for two swimsuits, one dress and to hem 5 labcoats, one silk blouse to alter and one scrub top to enlarge into a maternity top. I am so excited. I won't be online much except to ask a question or order supplies. Oh! To get my skill up to snuff I was going to take some online classes or go to the nearby college and take their clothing constructiion classes. Right now I have temporarily scrapped that Idea. I have found a professional seamstress with experience in wedding party atire, costum fabrication and more. Her current job at the local Janome store will allow her to mentor me. The great thing is that the store is only 1/4 mile from the hospital I work at. I can go there for an hour or two before I go to work. I plan on picking out complex sewing prpjects and she will help me through them. We still have to discuss price. It can't be any worse than some of the online classes I looked into. I feel like alterations will be the bread and butter of the business. There is also a lady at church that does alterations and she says that she has all the business she can handle and will be happy to help me learn to do alterations. Belinda |

Not at all. Congratulations. If you like alterations, you can make more doing alterations or high end sewing than any other way. If you want to make wedding gowns fit to order, you can make a mint.

Do I sound utterly rediculus? No - sounds like something you'll really enjoy. And with the way you've organised it you've got nothing to lose. Hope it all works out. Pauline

Good luck Belinda. You might want to check into the Home Sewing Association's Trained Sewing Educator course. Several in my ASG chapter took the course and are publicly listed as trained sewing educators for this area on the HSA website. Go to www.sewing.org for information on this. Marty |
