I'm doing a McCall's top M5369 (size 4). Some of the pieces have written on it "Cut on fold", but the diagrams of the pattern layout don't show them as being even near the fold. They have the front and back facings as two seperate pieces but paper pattern shows for the back facing it's supposed to be cut on the fold. Same goes for some of the ruffles. Is this common for McCalls - I've never seen a pattern say one thing and the directions something totally different. Is it just another way to layout pieces and save fabric?
Thanks!!
- Maureen.

I've never seen a pattern where the layout diagram shows pieces that need to be cut on the fold not on the fold. Did you look through the sewing directions to see of the pictures of the pieces in there look like 1 or 2 pieces? That can help you with the layout. I often find more economical ways to layout the pattern, but if a piece is supposed to be on the fold you can't mess with that.

OK, a little more coffee has kicked in. In the pattern layout diagram did it show that you cut out a piece marked on the fold, flipped it over keeping the center pinned down & continued cutting? Hard to put that into words, but you would still have only 1 fabric piece, the same as cutting on the fold.

Often when the fabric is a single layer, you'll find pattern pieces that are to be cut on fold shown that way. I often, if possible will save that portion of the fabric and still cut the piece on the fold so that I can get an exact match (and because I prefer cutting a thicker piece of fabric. Sometimes it is not possible to do that. If not, I usually put a pin on the fold line at the top and bottom and across the top and bottom of the pattern so that I can get a fair match when I turn it over.

The pattern pieces are supposed to be cut single-layer, flipped over and continue cutting. This is the same thing that needs to be done with the back facing too. Every pattern there's a little more to learn......
JoAnn's has a "sewing cafe" on Thursday nights (it's actually done by the Stitch Connection staff who sell the machines in the store). I was the only one there & I got one-on-one help. Now I just have to order, and wait for, my 2mm hemming presser foot. No one sells Kenmore sewing machine accessories near me, not even the Sears parts & service centers. It gets me so mad that the shipping charges for the presser foot is almost the same price as the presser foot itself!!!!!
