These softball and baseball stories hit so close to home. last Thursday I was hit in the back of the head when umpiring a game--I never lossed conciousness but I bled like I have never bled before. I gained 5 staples to my newly highlighted hair do. I was lucky that it was not thrown hard ( the catcher that hit me was not a good player so he didn't throw hard at all). I got hit from about 5 feet away.

This gal didnt fare near as well though: http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/07/25/softball.death.ap/index.html

That is just so sad. Terribly sad. I feel for her family. Softball is my hobby and favorite sport ever.

This is so tragic that my heart goes out to the family. My DD played baseball on a co-ed team (she was the only girl) and I used to cringe every time the ball came near her head. Fortunately, helmets were required with a certain amount of padding for protection.

So sad and luckily that doesn't happen very often.

So happy to hear that you're doing okay after your injury.

That is very sad.
I am glad to hear that you are okay after getting hit.
When I was a teenager, I saw an ump get hit in the middle of the chest with a softball and passed out cold. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital and was released after a few hours. There was another man in our county that was killed when a ball hit him in the chest. It happened before the man I mentioned, which made it even scarier when we saw him hit the ground.
I played softball for a couple of years, but wasn't great at it. My oldest sister was the star player back then. She was great at basketball too.

My injury was not terrible at all. It was a bloody mess but apparently you bleed profusely when you get whammed in the head. Had that ball hit me in the arm or the leg it would have left nothing more than a bruise.
