I followed a tutorial I found at Craftster and made my dd a dress from a man's shirt! I love it! I am going to make one from a denim shirt for the cooler weather for her to wear to school :)

the front of the shirt is the back of the dress, so you don't have to put in a zipper (my most loathed sewing task:whacky: ) The straps are made from the sleeves.

Great job Wendy! Your daughter looks so happy with her new dress. What a clever idea for worn out dress shirts.

Great looking dress. I would have never guessed that it was once a mans shirt!

Thanks everyone!

Here is a link to the tutorial
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=170402.0

as you can see, I didn't do it exactly, I changed the shape of the front bodice so I didn't need to use trim, and I used the left overs from cutting the length to make the ruffle at the bottom.

I did use a thrift store shirt for this one, but I've also got my eye on one of my dh's shirts, just trying to figure out if he'd miss it too much LOL!

I have a 2 YO birthday next week. Any idea if it would work to change the size to a 2? Would you just make it narrower & shorter? This little girl adores my DS & I think he has some shirts he is getting rid of. It would also save money on a present.

You can make it any size you want as long as you have enough length or width in the shirt, kwim? I used a size L for my dd who wears a girls size 5 or 6, and used up nearly all the fabric. I believe in the tutorial the girl is probably closer in age to 2 :). You should easily be able to do it. When I cut out mine I used a dress that I had already and used it for size. In the tutorial it tells you how big to make it using the lo's measurements. You could also use a pattern to cut the shape I'm sure. So yes, you would make it narrower and shorter. Read through the tutorial, if you have any more questions, I'd be happy to try to help!

The dress turned out adorable! I love the little ruffle at the bottom. I just love seeing people's "recons," but I haven't been brave enough to try one myself. Maybe one of these days..

That is adorable! I love make-over projects like that. You can make some adorable things with yard sale and thrift store finds.
I have a 3x men's shirt I bought for $1 to make a dress for dd. She decided she doesn't want to wear pink anymore so I never made it. I thought about making me a shirt dress to wear with leggings. Maybe I'm too old for leggings now tho. Maybe with jeans.

You're welcome. Check this one out too:

Maybe I'll have enough fabric left to add a ruffle so mine can be an actual dress. (like I really have time to start another project. :dave: It's on my want to do list anyway.)

Bama, those are great! I have yet to ever sew something for me to wear! I like the shirt dress, But I don't know that I'd ever find a shirt huge enough to make a dress to fit me LOL!

Wendy, you have inspired me! I so love that dress! I'm putting this on my list of stuff to sew for my 6 year old!

Bams, great links! We could all have so much fun with these. Maybe in the future we could all work on a reconstruction project...sounds like a lot of fun!

Thanks Wendy! I scanned the tutorial but didn't read it close. I printed it for a later time. I will have to estimate with another pattern since I don't have Madison here to measure.

Those are Great!! I had made my daughter a dress from one of DH's shirts years ago, I think I saw it in a Nancy's Notions book, (501 Sewing hints??) It cut the bodice from the button placket and used the shirt tail as the hem, very cute, where are the pictures... (before digital, would actually have to dig through photo albums!)
