My son just bought a couple of new suits. It was a nightmare getting the alterations done correctly. The salesman we decided really had no clue as to what he was doing. Finally, two months and much grief later we got the suits back and now I still need to move the top two buttons over. I know there is a certain way to sew these buttons back on so there is a shank made out of the thread so to speak. I would appreciate any help given. Thanks so much. Jay

I usually lay a toothpick under the button. Sew the button with the toothpick under it. Before you finally knot and secure the thread, remove the toothpick. Wind around and around the threads between the button and the jacket. This will make your "shank". Secure and knot your thread. |

EmaCon, Thanks so much! From my bygone years of sewing I knew that the thread needed to be wound around but I never would have thought of a toothpick!! Makes perfect sense to me now. Jay

Someday you may want to purchase a little button spacer. It has is a little plastic rectangle that has "steps" so that you can determine how thick your coat is and step the size of the button to match the depth of your coat. Each step had a little elongated "bite" out so that you can sew your button while holding it in place on the spacer. When doing things like woolen overcoats you may need two match sticks otherwise.

This is Maggie, an English Bulldog who is my granddog and belongs to my son. She lives with us. If there were a word for her it would be LAZZZZZZZYYYYYY......and when she gets tired and sits down you know you'll be there a while. It is like moving a refrigerator.
